if that would be so critical, there would be very precise instructions in the workshop ZF manual for the 4HP22/24 how to install the solenoids.

In case you are not sure contact a authorized ZF parts distributor with all the details on the name tag on your transmission such as type, serial number and parts list number, based on this they can exactly tell you the part number for your transmission. All this is needed https://zftranspart.mypinnaclecart.c...ge_id=id_4hp22. Never heard that a transmission needs a rebuild every 20KKM

You can order a complete refurbished valve body based on your car's trans details =
    transmission serial no.
    ZF transmission part no.
    ZF transmission designation
customer transmission part no. = BMW number

    https://zftranspart.mypinnaclecart.c...product&id=165
    from Europeantransmission $ 685 https://www.europeantransmissions.co...5i-730i-733i-/
$685.00, Market price: $865.00, you save $180.00 21% less BMW ZF 4HP24EH Remanufactured Valve Body electronic, Remanufactured only with OEM parts and the latest upgrades. Dyno tested with the computer simulator under the toughest road conditions.
Two version of Valve Body available E7 & E9

But you can also find it in the BMW ETK, as I do not have your VIN, I can only show you the p/n of my car for the pressure valve
item 2 24341217078 up to 12/1988, or if Switzerland version valid till 02/1989 http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...s_2/#1217078_2
Warning: the single pressure regulator valve costs at the BMW dealer or the known online shops more than a complete remanufactured valve body, MSRP $783.48

I would contact the shop who rebuilt the valve body and discuss the issue with them. You are a paying customer and customer service is included in the service.

no, then it runs in limp mode, if it runs at all without pressure or un-coltrolled pressure.

Found on website this post. Does anybody try to do that to check if is shifting better? Gentlemen,I was going through your manual evaluation section, and noticed that you rated the ATSG automatic transmission overhaul manual. There is an error in the valve body portion of that manual. There are two valve slides that if you follow the manual will be installed backwards. They are on page 90, on the lower portion of the diagram. Item number 2 which is the 2-3 shift valve, and item number 5 which is the 1-2 shift T.V. valve. The diagram shows that you install the valves into the bore before the springs. The correct installation is to turn the valve and spring assembly around so that the spring goes into the bore first on each of these valves. I found this out the hard way when overhauling my transmission, and burned up two of the clutch packs. During its first test drive. Did you buy that ATSG automatic transmission overhaul manual or is it online? Print number? Print date? Can you give us a link to the manual you refer to? This manual shows on page 90 only text and refers to 5HP19 but not 4HP22, BMW, AUDI, PORSCHE Technicians Guide http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Troubl...ch%20Guide.pdf 4HP22/24 info starts on page 24 and ends on page 58

plastic check balls are usually to be replaced as they get smaller. Where the check balls are installed is in the manual, size and part number.

Look at this two lower front of valve body both looks like same one is hydraulic and another is hydraulic electronic pay attention to the valve body hydraulic plastic check ball is on models only with external oil tube and another one is hydraulic electronic E-9 model check ball some models only. What would you recommend from your experience put it check ball there or not ? Simple answer yes or no ?

    No simple yes/no possible.
The alldata picture does not show if it is for a BMW or another car like Landrover, Audi and the many other cars and models where ZF supplied a 4HP22. The ATSG manual says on some models only, because it is for BMW, Audi, Porsche.

If you want to be 100% sure, contact ZF with details on the ZF tag: serial no., model, parts list number = Stucklistennummer https://www.transmissiondigest.com/z...ropean-flavor/
and ask for the Stucklistennummer and they will send you a long list with drawings which EXACTLY is for YOUR ZF 4HP22 transmission installed on your 02/1990 E32 735i, there you can see which valve body gasket is used and which balls are where.

The Stucklistennummer from ZF is the only 100% correct list. ZF or any ZF dealer can give you that. What is the ZF Stucklistennummer on your transmission?
Based on this list https://zf-belarus.by/upload/pdf/cat2017.pdf your 02/1990 E32 735i short wheel base automatic 4HP22 probably has (unless it was already changed before)
    11-88 - 04/92 1043 010 687
    or
    11/89 - 02/92 1043 010 715
    or
    11/89 - 02/93 1043 010 716
    or
    08/90 - 05/92 1043 010 723 (in case it already has been replaced)

    E E32 735iL has again different numbers, see pages 36, 37

I have a list of valve body gaskets (Japan spec!, maybe also other countries) for the ZF 4HP22
    1043 326 161 for E34 M5 3,4
    1043 326 162 for 518, 520, 528, 530, 533,535, 633, 635, 735 up to built year 1985
    1043 326 232 for 535, 635 with AEGS
    1043 326 253 for 525, 528, 535, 635, 735 from 1985 https://aftermarket.zf.com/remotemed...c-4hp24-22.pdf

20211107_181519.jpg20211107_181548.jpgI see your point thanks for reply I appreciate that. We have one guy who burned up two of the clutch packs during its first test drive. There is an error in the valve body portion of that manual. There are two valve slides that if you follow the manual will be installed backwards. Which is the 2-3 shift valve and another is the 1-2 shift T.V. valve. The diagram shows that you install the valves into the bore before the springs. The correct installation is to turn the valve and spring assembly around so that the spring goes into the bore first on each of these valves. He found this out the hard way when overhauling his transmission. Transmission was 4HP22EH. Do you know which is 1-2 shift T.V. valve ? Here is the picture of lower front. 1-2 shift T.V. valve and 2-3 shift valve.jpg

there are detailed instructions on my website of a ZF 4HP22 EH E9, 4 solenoid channel plate , about 70!! pics where the balls are located, how the valve pistons and springs are positioned, which valve body gasket, 1992 E34 535i, repair manual used from ATSG, and this repair was done in 2013 and the transmission still works , 3 accumulator cups and 1 check ball on this transmission.
That instruction is so detailed, I have nothing to add http://twrite.org/shogunnew/files/ja...Valvebody.html Please download it!, I do not want that much traffic for the website, otherwise it might be overloaded. Download the pics, do not link them! Thanks.

I do not know from which manual your explosion view pics are, but the ATSG detailed instructions work.

If that does not help, tell your friend to get the Stucklistennummer from ZF with HIS transmission tag details, this is the only 100% correct list. ZF or any ZF dealer can give him that.

ATSG manual for BMW, Audi, Porsche shows on page 40 ZF-4HP-22/24 MODEL "E-7", "5 SOLENOID" LOWER "REAR" VALVE BODY = not the E9

New to the party and have to say the thread title is confusing. So hope comments are welcome.

The mention of adapter sleeves and drums sound more like 6HP and 5HP issues rather than 4HP. An EH trans will not work properly without a speed sensor and an H trans will not work without a governer. The EH trans has a kickdown switch under the throttle pedal so it will not have a TV (throttle valve) cable. ZF set the pressure regulator at the factory and discourage adjusting it.

Filling the trans with the wrong ATF or to the wrong level will of course lead to poor performance. But all we know so far is that there is an issue with 1-2 shift. For example, there is no mention of low or high line pressure. While it remains unclear what the issue is, perhaps it would be an idea to concentrate on that? Maybe confirm if there are any fault codes in the TCM and what has been done to resolve the matter so far?

Screenshot_20211109-051406.jpgYes manual BMW Audi Porsche. You a bit mistaken I wrote BMW Peugeot Ford there is a different pages in that book. Do you know any body who can print gage 90 from that book and post it here we can look if is same valve body BMW 735i 1988 and 1990.

This service manual covers only the 4HP22/EH. This tranny is used on 730/735 models. The 740 is equipped with another tranny, the A5S 580Z, so you can't use this manual. The 750 is equipped with the 4HP24EH, which is basically a reinforced 4HP22/EH, to handle the massive torque of the V12 (450 Nm). Therefore, according to the supplier, this manual can also be used for the 4HP24EH.This manual consists out of many photo's, including the supporting text.

I posted above this: ATSG manual for BMW, Audi, Porsche shows on page 40 ZF-4HP-22/24 MODEL "E-7", "5 SOLENOID" LOWER "REAR" VALVE BODY = not the E-9
"E9", "4 SOLENOID" VALVE BODY starts from page 43 http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Troubl...ch%20Guide.pdf

Three different versions of valve bodies have been used on BMW vehicles, with minor differences between them
The 1st version, designated Early "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1986 and used up thru 1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.
The 2nd version, designated Late "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1988 and used up thru Mid-1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.
The 3rd version, designated "E-9", has 4 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in Mid-1989 and used up thru 1994. This version uses a shift solenoid for the reverse lockout function.

Now you talk about 1988 and 1990 E32 735. Based on the above mentioned details from ATSG the 1988 (you did not mention a production month) E32 735 is version E-7 1st version or 2nd version, and E32 735 1990 is version E-9.

If that is not enough for you, forget about ATSG and contact ZF with the Stucklistennummer from ZF, which is the 100% correct list. ZF or any ZF dealer can give you that.

I do not have a copy of the 1992 print ATSG BMW Peugeot Ford ZF 4hp-22 TECHTRAN manual, you can get a used one on ebay for under $15

The overhaul was done on a 1988 BMW 735i. That was built 7/87 the transmission was 4hp22EH.I already check that by wiring diagram 1/87 to 8/87 . His was built 7/87 BMW 735i 1988 5 solenoids 8 pins E7 version.

I have a copy of the ATSG BMW Peugeot Ford manual. Page 90 was revised in 1996. If you compare it to page 32 of the Tech Guide, there appear to be descrepancies. On page 90, the position of the spool valves and springs appears to be different on 1-2 and 2-3 shift. The A clutch damper also has two springs, not one. As Shogun has suggested, try your ZF dealer for a parts list for your particular transmission. That said, it seems unlikely that ZF assembled your VB wrongly

ZF said mechanic has digitally to locate plastic check balls he thinks need two check balls another guy said need 3 check balls and another guy said need one check ball.I asked him I will send back valve body he rebuilt and return me my money he doesn't want that way he wants studying where to put it. In the manual you have is there E9 version of the valve body ? Could you print me page of valves and springs seating in lover front and rear please. I think there is something wrong with the valves or springs mess up. I have another valve body from my previous car also E9 version 4 solenoids I'm trying to make it write and put it Thanks in advance !

Shogun has posted the link for the Tech Guide above. Page 55 shows 1 check ball only in the E9 four solenoid VB. But it also says 'Some models only'. So you have to conclude that it may not actually have one. Guessing is no good. To be certain, you need to get the details for your particular trans from ZF. Maybe confirm why you think the VB is responsible? Your supplier is certainly going to ask that question and you need to be able to rule out a clutch issue
