the valve bodies are different based on early E-7, E-7, E9, but they all fit in the same housing. Outer cast iron housing 22 and 24 are same dimensions. The 4HP22 housing is big enough to also hold the larger 4HP24 parts, that is also the reason why the LandRover specialists modify 4HP22 transmissions with 4HP24 parts. quote: We can build the 4HP22 but fit the centre section of the box with the bigger 4HP24 internals which upgrades...., the 24 one is much stronger, https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/zf4hp22/ differences in valves bodies we discussed earlier in detail, each valve body is different.
Transplanting the electronics = valve body from one box to another is possible, see here the details, you can seen the oil channels are 99% the same he mentions http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/gear...rbox_swap.html

Ok. I understand that all bigger parts can fit in 22nd case. If E7 version valve body and E9 version valve body are holes same location which can match it with the senter case section that will be good have a look at picture of the case and valve body top side where valve body a touch to. Between valve body and transmission case there is no gascket and sticking point aluminum valve body to aluminum case. I thing E7 version is old school going to work better then E9 version. You said neen to change Transmission TCU and what about Engine ECU also needs to chahge ?

In the link above Johan shows that he changed on his E32 735 from an late E-7 to a newer valve body, probably E9, he changed the valve body complete and the electronics and also the transmission control unit, not the DME. Transmissions made before 09/88 ~12/88 have an electrical control unit inside the box that is controlled via 8-pins. Transmissions after that have a control unit with 7-pins.
I my opinion is does not make sense to go back to old E-7 valve body. Late "E-7" was only built for a short time, introduced in 1988 and used up thru Mid-1989. Then the improved E-9 was introduced in Mid-1989 and used up thru 1994 in E32. Why go back in older developments stages? Also difficult to find a fitting transmission control unit, the 8-pin E-7 wire loom is no longer available. Forget the idea to change to late E-7, fix your newer and better E-9.

I also don't want to go back but shifting gears from forward gear to third gear has dull thud when shift. One mechanic rebuilt transmission valve body and he changed all solenoids in valve body 4 of them. Another valve body I wanted rebuilt by myself it was same model E9 version then I called another distributor in USA who also rebuilt transmission valve body that sales man who sale the parts he said order has to be made from Germany and two shift solenoid aren't available at this time. Other guy who rebuilt valve body he did order all solenoids from Germany here is the issue one guy says one thing and another guy said different story. I am confusing here which two shift solenoids he installed. If mechanic installed two shift wrong solenoids then shifting could be not working properly.

because E-9 is the latest development of the 4HP22. As a machine ages, technologies can become outdated and the new developments, improvements and upgrades eliminate usually the weak points.
For example old style steel seals vs New improved teflon seals http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/page_43.htm

The problem has been solved with scanner. Scanner have had remove vehicle from limp home mode. The problem is in cluster. The E and M modes must be shown in the cluster otherwise the system does not work with the scanner system works. If E and M shown in the cluster and transmission not shift right the problem is in cluster. When scanner connected to the OBD while test drive with data Automatic Transmission the mode E and M not shown on cluster then shifting begins from fourth gear and shifting smooth same like in M mode but in M mode shifting begins from third gear.

so you solved your problem now? The problem was the cluster, not showing the transmission mode?

I still did not solved I just realized where the problem is. The scanner give me idea what should I do next. Without scanner I would not know the problem in the cluster but something might put cluster into a problem. When scanner connected to the OBD with data AEGS while the engine is running the TCU relay turns on that is mean all shifts goes through all gears from 1st to 4th with lock up solenoid is on all the time. TCU relay is ON when scanner is connected to the OBD and when is disconnected TCU relay is OFF.

If you disconnect somehow E and M mode from the cluster then TCU will turn relay ON then pressure regulator solenoid MV5 will set pressure low so then when you select gear to position D you will not have harsh drag forward and when you release the foot brake the vihecle not moving forward it is moving forward that time when you press acellerator a bit and you will feel how torque converter is functioning with sound great.
Another way might be possible if you turn On lock up solenoid while the engine is running at the idle speed then you will have it all gears will shifts good and might turn not showing E and M mode on the cluster.

That is why I alway return to the same question when you turn program switch to mode A you not have the A but you have the E. I call E mode Emergency Exit which is E economy mode.

One wire not connected from TCU pin 31 to brake light switch pin 3. Also was checked voltage at TCU pin 4 neutral position switch no voltage there. It should be 10v. TCU pin 31 is full load it should be connected with brake light switch. The automatic transmission TCM pin 32 in not connected anywhere but it needs to be connected to somewhere because this is EML signal.

E-7 Early and Late version has TCU pin 14 and 15 program switch. E-9 version has pin 14 of the TCU connected to the cluster pin 8 but in car connected to program switch. TCU Pin 4 is shift lever position neutral in E-7 early version and TCU pin 4 is program switch in E-7 late version. E-9 version has TCU pin 4 goes to engine control system. Anyone knows where should be connected TCU pin 4 ? Thanks !

Shift lever position switch terminal 2 connects to TCM pin 29, not 28. As previously explained, that switch is a matrix. Check the table on page 2460-04 of the diagrams. It shows when switches L1-L4 are live.

NB. The switch numbers L1-L4 do NOT correspond to the external pin numbers

I was checking not terminal. I was checking 10 volts if present at when gear selector is set to position 2nd gear there is no voltage. TCU pin 28 is a second gear at selector and TCU pin 29 is a third gear at selector and on dashboard matrix. The third gear is ok gives 10 volts but second gear no voltage at range indicator 2.

    - - - Updated - - -

Terminal 2 is a gear third and terminal 3 is a gear second.

What does L1 L2 L3 L4 means ? Terminal 3 at selector switch which is 2nd gear at gear selector and on dashboard matrix also shows 2nd gear and on TCU pin 28 has no voltage. Is L2 second gear ?

I assume that should be the terminal numbers, not the gear number.

Yes. But also terminal number 3 at gear second and on matrix display number 2 not geting power. There should be at least 10v. Transmission Range Switch terminal 8 wire BL/BR gives 12 volts at L1 and L2 whitch is connected to TCU pin 18. TCU pin 28 connected to transmission Range Switch terminal 3 whitch is L2 second gear 0 volt ?
Terminal 2 is third gear L3 it gives 12v.

Maybe transmission TCU pin 28 internal has a problem or the problem could be in Range Switch ?

E-7 Late version TCU pin 28 has Shift Lever Position Park and Neutral. E-7 Early version has Shift lever Position 2nd Gear. What should be in E-9 version Second Gear or Park and Neuntral ? Maybe problem in the cluster I still did not check wiring in cluster because when I connect the scanner the scanner fix the problem but revoving E and M from the matrix. I did check which solenoids is on when scanner connected while drive test there is all solenoid is OFF except pressure regulator solenoid is ON. Looks like vehicle start moving from 4th gear and forward gear also is ON. Or maybe starts moving from 3rd gear then pressure regulator making adjustment on RPM and vehicle speed there was 100km/h at 2100RPM/1mn without any gear shifts it was moving like on M mode.

It doesn't matter if your car has an E7 or E9 trans - the shift matrix layout is the same. Using switches L1 to L4, the gear selection is sent to the TCM as a sort of code. So second gear manual is 1000. You will note that L2 is only live in park and neutral. That is so the TCM knows the engine is out of gear.

If you ever owned a CB radio with a mechanical channel changer, it worked in the same way. But instead of producing just seven codes, it would produce forty

E-7 Early version TCU pin 28 to 5 has at least 10 volts and E-7 Late version also has TCU pin 28 to 5 has less than 1 volt. E-9 version TCU pin 4 has a neutral and E-7 version TCU pin 28 also has a neutral. When you exchange TCU pins 28 with 29 you have on matrix display E mode onto M mode the vihecle moves from 4th gear but no reverse gear and when you put gear selector to position neutral on dashboard matrix display S mode.

For an example if your friend has a CB radio and you both talking between on channel 5 but his CB has on the display channel 2 . Why channel 2 and you are on the channel 5 and you hearing each other because depends on programming. His CB radio programmed channel 2 as channel 5.
