I know this is long but so is the project, for me anyway.
My long sought after 2005 325iT, auto, 114K miles has a blown HG. Pretty sure the PO knew was dodgy but did not reveal. Otherwise the interior/exterior is in the “8” category (silver/grey) so worth putting in the effort to R&R the engine
I purchased a used 2004 98K engine from what I believe is a reputable reseller on eBay. Oxymoron? It does appear carefully removed with all the electrical connections in good condition. I did a leak down test and it was good about a 5% variance between cylinders.
I obviously want to do all the maintenance possible while on the stand. I have listed below. I am in Temecula area so just need to be done by October so I can put the e46 M3 cab and e90 sedan back in the garage!
I have Bently, watched lots and lots of videos – have quickjack, hoist, transmission and engine stands
My working plan:
Replace all I can on new (used) engine while sitting on pallet. Everything but the oil pan gasket as far as I can tell. Put on the stand and do the pan gasket. I need to used the headers from the blown engine.
There are a lot of items from the old engine I can use such as recently replace coil packs and plugs. Will be reusing alternator, AC, Powersteering (was recently redone)
Replace
Water pump
Thermostat and housing
Radiator
All other coolant lines and pipes that would be under manifold
Valve cover gasket
Engine main seal(s)
Oil filter housing gasket
Oil pan gasket and visually inspect crank
Clean/inspect/replace DISA
Transmission filter/fluid change
Is there a process for flushing the coolant, oil passages/galleys and fuel delivery while on stand?
Please comment! Thanks for your assistance in advance!
O-ring that connects the pickup to the oil pump
VANOS hose
Consider rebuilding the VANOS while you're at it.
Expansion tank
Plastic hanger thingy that holds the expansion tank and connects the other hoses
Check the trans cooler thermostat in the above thingy.
Heater hoses. They're a PITA once the engine is installed
Intake profile gaskets
Throttle body gasket
Vacuum hoses on the intake
CCV and all related pipes much easier to do when the engine is out or the manifold is off.
Consider replacing the injector o-rings, too. That may be overkill but you may as well be thorough
Check the timing chain guides carefully. They're not prone to break on these engines, but check them just in case.
Current stable:
2002 525i (Daily Driver)
1994 SN95 Mustang 'Vert (The Bumblebee)
2001 325i Convertible (Beach cruiser project)
Change the plastic cooling pipes under the intake manifold.
Ironically, a good part of the cooling system was replaced about a year ago by the PO. This, reservoir, some or all the other water hoses. I have ordered new anyway.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Watch this space for some pix once I really get into it. I am SURE there will be questions to come.
Doubtful the ones under the manifold were done since it involves removing the intake manifold. Do them now, you'll kick yourself if you don't.
