Everyone is at or a little under 5k mileage to date July 1st.
Oil change was done last Sept of 2020.
Because of the low mileage, oil appearance and almost no top offs...seeing that I'm on top of the BMW oil change game...AND with my bological internal "oil change" alert, I decided to not change the existing oil...But, to change the....oil filter! (Ive got plenty in stock)
Stroke of genius! HUh....?

I've never done changed a filter without changing the oil, but I've only got 50 years wrenching experience, though if you think that's a "stroke of genius" have at it
Theoretically, any filtration element becomes more efficient as it is used. As the mesh becomes dirtier it creates smaller and smaller crevices and filters more and more. Till one day filtration reaches 100% and your filter doesnt let anything pass lol.
With that being said a new filter without a oil change might not be best as the smallest particles are currently the only thing passing through your filter vs a new one will allow much bigger particulate. Food for thought
My bet is in the opposite direction.
Whatever particles left in the oil (from the 1st filter)...for a new filter to collect,,, the 5 months oil gets a second chance to flow SOMEWHAT cleaner than initially. The oil will never be cleaned back to its original state of course.
Hope that made sense.

Probably pointless to change the filter by itself. And not changing the oil often in these cars is being lazy, or penny-wise and pound-foolish.
Do whatever "stroke of genius" logic you think will work for you . I can tell you from decades of experience, several with BMWs, I've never just changed the filter without changing the oil. My E39 has over 350k miles and still running strong, but maybe you have some inside knowledge with this "Oil change game for bmw" that the rest of us don't have
I didn't start this thread to ridicule anyone but to share...
And to think, at one point it was popular to think the earth was "flat".

Change once a year or 5-7500 interval and if it’s a low mileage car fully warm the engine up and drive it to burn off the condensation in the engine and exhaust system, short drives all the time, not good
This exact post has appeared twice on a different forum, only there it was a "strock" of genius. I'm curious how the new filter restores TBN and reduces TAN?

Finished the oil change...trying out 2 brands of oil...both
Euro and 5w40
1Quaker State
2Valvoline
The 220k m54 is simply quiet and in heaven. I'm now watching for longevity.

Unless you perform a used oil analysis, any perceived differences are total guesses and make-believe. It's impossible to see "longevity" of oil. An M54 will be smooth and quiet lubed with vegetable oil; you need quantitative data to judge an oil's performance. Mobil 1 is a fantastic oil, yet makes an engine louder because of its additive pack, for example. Castrol 5w-40 is a mediocre oil by comparison; the data shows that.
