I'm new to 7 series so I'm hoping someone can help me out...so I just recently purchased one after having a 5 series for many years. I have bought a 99 740iL with 210k miles, and the whole coolant system has been replaced recently before purchase. My question is it normal for them to run at 221F at cruising and 221 - 228F at idle? Also at this temp is it normal for the fan to run constantly?
I am new to the e38 as well and recently bought this 750iL that seems to be happy running at similar temps. I am yet to do a coolant flush. I am told that the thermostat on the M73 engine is 108C which is correct to the 226F that I saw on my scanner. The gauge in the dash was pegged at the middle of the display. This may be the correct temps.

You both have a temperature-mapped thermostat that is basically a 108C mechanical thermostat but has a heater which can open it down to 85C, The only time the thermostat is opened at lower temperatures is when demanding perfprmance. All about cooling systems here:

Personally I think 185 degrees Fahrenheit, 85C, all the time is a better operating temperature than 225 degrees F, 107C. for the engine, the transmission, and the coolant.
Couldn't agree more!

I live in arizona where its 110 degrees outside right now. My normal operating temperature is 110c. A little high but its is really hot here.
Is it typical for the fan to run at full speed at 226F?

So based on that the Aux Fan shouldn't be running all the time at 221F?
IIRC if the air conditioning is turned on, the aux fan is activated. There is also an air temperature sensor somewhere between the coolant radiator and the viscous fan & fan shroud that also activates the aux fan. (I'm pulling this thought from really old memory of studying the wiring diagram so... )
When the pressure of the coolant system is to high where does it release out at?
Many users reported that the are getting the Norton autofix error 8504 0 on the device. The error can happens because of the following kind.
1). your system security product installed issue
2). your program file are not updated with latest version.
The coolant recovery tank has a filler cap which has a pressure relief valve built in. If that relief valve is clogged or jammed shut then what is the next thing in the system that will blow apart or leak? Possibilities: coolant recovery tank splits and leaks, heater hoses to cabin heating system leak through the clamping point at their ends, the tank ends to radiator core union starts to fail and leak... you get the idea.
