    Convertible Top Issue

Just got my '01 Roadster back on the road after a couple of years of hibernation (3 kids under the age of 6). It's running like a top now but the power roof for some reason isn't working. When I press the button the motor for the top makes a sound but nothing happens. Any ideas what it might be? Thanks!

How's the hydraulic fluid level? If it's low, fill it up. But also, find out why it's leaking.

Does it not work in both up/down scenarios?

It doesn't work in either setting (luckily it's easy enough to do manually). Where is the hydraulic fluid reservoir?

In the trunk, driver's side, behind the carpet. It's easy to do manually if you turn the t-handle to manual mode. If it's easy now in the non-manual mode, I'd suspect a leak.

Great - will give it a look this weekend. Is the fluid readily available at a local auto parts store or does it need to be special ordered?

Make sure to look closely at the fluid reservoir for the dimple arrows on the lower part of the reservoir which are the full markers. It really doesn't need much oil in it. The book says BMW 54 34 8 410 306 is the convertible hydraulic fluid kit which is listed as ...

Thanks. Any tips on how to remove the carpeting without breaking anything? There doesn’t seem to be any obvious place to detach it, and there’s a trunk light embedded in the center as well as a 6-disc CD changer which limits my access to the driver’s side.

No need to remove carpeting. Just look for the plastic black screws in the corner of the Motor..I think there is about three plastic screws. Once removed just bend down the carpeting in that corner and you will have access to the motor.

You just need to remove the partition (carpet?) in the trunk behind the fuel tank/car seats. There are several round (black) friction plugs along the top of the partition that you can remove with something like a plastic pry tool. You may also need to remove the driver's side partition, but you may be able to get by without doing that.
