hi everyone, Im new here. I have owned this 745 sport since 2004 but has been mostly sitting since 2012 except to start up and move it around some. so recently I put in fresh gas and was doing some hot laps around the mountain to road test the car, maybe drove 5 miles between a half dozen trips. Yesterday It was running real well tried to start 2 hours later No start...engine starts quickly but immediately stumbles and sputters and chugs.
I checked the fuel volume and pressure at hose on fuel rail near the firewall.
fuel volume is about 2 liters in 20 seconds and pressure 30 psi
Any Thoughts? is this electrical problem or fuel...
You'll get more and better replies if you post this on the right section, for the e65.
Some questions:
Just 2 liters of fuel? That pressure seems low (not sure). Is the car level? It might be barely sucking in enough fuel to start but not stay running. I'd try putting more gas in it.
Is the check engine light on? Usually a first step is to read any error codes the car might have (with an OBDII reader).
sorry the car is 1983 745i sport with 100 liter tank euro import...
this car usually runs out of fuel when the gauge reads 30 litres... I added 5 gallons before the 5 miles driven a nd tank is readind around 40 litres now.
I also had the sender out to look in tank and was clean. voltage at in-tank pump is normal but the pump is original from 1983.
Sorry, the 2004 date threw me. Also I didn't know that car came as a 745.
Does the engine die as soon as you release it from Start to Run? If so, it might be the switch or something switch-related. Do other things stay on when it's in Run?

From that I gather it's still got electrical power on the Run setting. (It fires some, is probably getting some fuel, and other things like the dash lights, radio, etc. will stay on in the Run setting. Right?) That suggests it's not the ignition switch.
What happens if you give it a little gas then? (I don't know that engine at all, but it might have an idle control valve that is dirty or acting up.)
Also, the MAF might be acting up. Sometimes the engine will run better with it unplugged, meaning it prob needs to be replaced.
(I'm hoping others who know that car weigh in here...)
1983 was a split year for Ljetronic and Motronic.
What is the production date of this car? If unavailable, does it have an electronically controlled four speed transmission?
I make E23 parts.
09/1983 745i (stolen spring '13 around Houston, TX Achatgruen on nutria buffalo. 8481080)
10/1984 745i
11/1984 745i
11/1984 735i (10:1-265/6)
Ford, MB, and GM round out the pack.
built: 6/1983. It is motronic. Also chipped and Malpassi(uk) power boost valve model #389 FPR.
So the car randomly started and ran perfectly after very many trys of chugging and sputtering so I could get it back inside... and right back to not starting.
Its got to be an electrical issue or afm? I do have several good repair manuals like factory service manual and electrics schematics for this car.
Just wondering where to start looking first
ECU could be dying. Stuck injectors. AFM open cicuit allows only to run on the CSV.
How are battery cables, specifically the grounds?
You really have not explained what has been tested and swapped so there is no where to go. Test reference sensors for Ohms and ACV output. Test CTS.
Have you even looked for obvious boot splits for the IC? A massive vac leak could be the cause. A healthy M106 does 17-18" at 850rpm all sealed up.
