Is it precise or could it be off by a good margin (500rpm's) at redline?
Have an early model so can't do the cluster trick unfortunately.

It's called Tachometer, not RPM gauge.
I have been driving for almost 50 years, and have never hit redline. Redline is an area of no return, the only reason to show it is to explain why parts are scattered across the landscape behind you. I grew up in a car dealership family, my father taught us that Redline was the kiss of death, not the max limit. No car should ever be driven at Redline. Maybe you might nudge up against it, but this should be one of those things that you never do intentionally. The ECU should prevent you from operating in the red zone. 3rd gear at redline should be something more than 80 mph. Just sayin'.
it's very precise.
It won't be off by 500rpm.
The engine speed / rotation is calculated by precise electronics. The display however is a mechanical conversion and can be off with age, deterioration or damage. Then again you can by an old external tach meter or maybe it needs to be a new one for a multi coil packs cars.
Iam kinda sorry that you never did , there s something to it, hearing engine screaming on top of its lungs when bouncing of raised limiter over 7000rpm...
sorry, was trying to replay to the dude who never in 50years took engine to redline...
