I have a 2011 E92 and it will be time to change the battery very soon. I have choice between two different batteries:
The first is an AGM with Cold Cranking Amps of 850, Cranking Amps of 975, and a Reserve Capacity of 170 and the size is Group 49
The second is non-AGM maintenance free with Cold Cranking Amps of 615, Cranking Amps of 755, and a Reserve Capacity of 95 and the size is Group 48
If I remember correctly, installing a more powerful battery than is called for by the manufacturer can shorten alternator life. Not certain if that's true or simply an urban mysth since I have heard it more than once. Also, I know there is a difference in the physical size between Gropus 49 and 48. Any assistance in obtaining the factory specs and recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks.
BTW, I know it has to be "registered" in the computer or will burn out the alternator. I hate that.
If you put the same battery that is already in the car, nothing needs to be done.
Also, a large battery will not hurt your alternator, it will not hurt your car.
Always replace the newer bmws with the correct battery and then register it to the car so the charging system knows there is a new battery,
Thank you gentlemen. As Columbo would say, "there is one more thing". To make this easier on myself, is there is place I can plug-in the BMW part number of the battery in my vehicle (it has been discontinued by BMW) which will give me the new (current) part number? Or a place that can give me the actual specifications on the battery I have by using the old part number. Thanks.

Are you gonna eat that?
Are you gonna eat that?
Thank you, however, it does not help as all it does when I put in the part number is give me a list of vehicles that battery was OE for. It does not tell me what group size it is, what the CCA is, etc. It does tell me it's an 80AH battery but that's all. The same thing when I search by VIN.
Relative4,
It's good to know that you are around to tell me that I'm wrong, but if the OP puts in the same battery, he doesn't need to do anything, that is assuming the older battery was registered correctly.
To minimize confusion, let me say that it is better to register the battery, but if the OP doesn't want to spend the money, and as long as he puts in the same battery, he doesn't have to register.
