Hello everyone, still trying to get this beast going.
Background: I changed my engine with a used rebuild engine, but the rebuilt engine had been sitting awhile. Everything looks good and I was told the rebuild was done be a shop.
When i start the car (first starts after swap) I have 2 issues.
1). There is oil burning smoke coming out of the collectors just below the stock headers. I adjusted the valves after the swap and before the first start but might not be perfect yet.
2). The car gets to 2000 rpm and then stops immediately, drops to about 1000 and then revs up again. its automatic cut off at 2000 rpm - every time - repeatable.
I was trying to concentrate on the second issue to get the car revving and running good before tackling the #1, but now i am thinking that the oil burning smoke is causing the O2 sensor and ECU to do #2.
Is that possible? What could cause oil smoke in the collectors - valve guide seals? cracked head? ? Maybe they used the intake seals on the exhaust valves?
I have not ran it much and was really hoping that the smoke was just oil and debris that touched the exhst, but it is consistent and noticeable.
New ECU (173), new AFM, new TPS, new IACV, changed CPS, checked Coil.
As always all replies are very much appreciated.
How long was the engine sitting? Outside or in a garage? I would start with a compression test.

someone just had this same revving issue. check the recent threads because i think they figured out the trouble
No e30s again.
Sitting outside is typically a bad thing. The cylinder walls tend to rust and therefore damage the rings. Or the rings are just stuck. See what the compression and leak down tests tells you. Good luck!
