Hey folks,
Today I removed the radiator, expansion tank, and lots of hoses from my 2002 330xi, manual.
Went reasonably well until I heard a thunk in the drain tub. Later found these pieces in the drained coolant.

Looks like parts for a check valve or overpressure valve:

Problem is, I don't know where they go. Neither, it seems, does the internet.
I just did Covid shot #2 and have been feeling a little "off" today. Can't remember exactly when I heard that thunk. At the time, I thought it was just a screw or something.
Any ideas?

Wow. That does look like a possibility. So PO has a t-stat totally fail, it breaks into pieces, and the pieces have been rattling around in the coolant hose for who knows how long?
I did put a couple thousand miles on this car before I "grounded" it due to failed clutch. Never any issues with cooling.
I have found a few weird surprises in this car, but that would be the biggest.
Next time I get a chance I'll remove the thermostat housing and see if there's anything in there.
Thermostat as there’s a spring. The installation of aftermarket cooling system parts is strictly verboten.
