i got a vanos code p1266 yesterday. Has to be solenoid right? Swaped it with one from a 98 with shorter pigtail. Had to cut my vanos solenoid pigtail and solder it on the one i got from jy.
SO..... After testing and comparing my 1995 525i voltage is coming from the pigtail, I got basically 12 volts from each side of the pigtail. On my 1997 528i, I got 12 volts on one side and around 4 volts on the other side. Is it the case that my 1995 BMW might have something wrong with the DME sending 12 volts each side?
According to my wiring diagram for a 1993 6 cylinder M50 - the B8208 'camshaft actuator' has a 12v feed via the Engine Control Module Relay and a splice where a load of different circuits are powered from. This then has the negative switched by the DME via a switched ground to operate the solenoid. If you are getting 12V on both wires, can I ask what you are measuring this against? (Where do you have the common or negative of your voltmeter connected to?). If you have this connected to a different ground (engine, body etc) and you are getting 12v on both wires (with the plug disconnected from the solenoid), then I would be looking for a short between the two wires, or the wire to the DME and a different wire at some point . Maybe somewhere the wiring loom is bent at an angle. etc?
A failure of of the DME to give you a back feed of 12V on a switched negative seems unlikely but not impossible. Rule out a wiring short outside of the DME first.
Okay here's what I got. It's almost unbelievable but the short is in the pigtail connector or the wiring, and let me be clear it is not where I soldered. Here's a picture to prove the point. You get to see my splices separated, and I'm still showing ohms.
The voltage from the loom is 12 volts and .02 volts. Therefore I'm going to try to salvage the pigtail figure out where the short is

Suppose a year specific solenoid should be ordered. Ill do that now. The short was in thr solenoid connector
So I got the new solenoid, in stock at my house. I have not installed it because I ended up using the junkyard solenoid from a 1996 328i single Vanos. I extended the original pigtail by soldering in two wires oh, these are pure sodders. Covered it up with some electrical tape, and then more electrical tape, installed and the check engine light went away card has been driving great for the last couple of weeks. I will keep the new solenoid on hand in case I need to swap it out. The ticking noise from it seems the Vanos is now clearing up oh, it is still present but not nearly as bad as it was before.
Google speech to text likes to add an Oh before every comma lol.
