I have a short to ground reporting O2 fault. can't yet see anywhere this can be occurring. I was considering replacing the entire length right up to the ECU connector contact and rebuilding the connector plug at the sensor end as the way to assure this problem is solved...
Is the ECU connector self explanatory when I look into opening it to replace the O2 sensor harness wires?
Pinout of the ECU should be in the ETM by built year. https://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e34/ is the present O2 sensor original with plug or a universal with crimp sleeves? Usually the problem is between O2 sensor and plug under the car.
do not solder anything, use correct sleeves for O2 sensor wiring which usually come along with a universal O2 sensor. Last week there was an interesting discussion on a German E31 forum about soldering or crimping wires of O2 sensors and reference air for LSH O2 sensors. Slots in the protective tube allow hot exhaust gases to reach the thimble. Reference outside air for the interior of the thimble comes from a hole in the sensor shell, or through the wiring connector.

Have you tried checking continuity with a DMM on the o2 connectors? This will help you narrow down where the fault is and what wires. Although it is hard to see when down there, the o2 sensor cables aren't too long and snake right up to the DME from the transmission tunnel.
Find the DME pin out, unplug the O2s and find the short.

and if you would tell us built year and month, we could even help you to find the pin numbers, this is not enough in your profile, pls add year and month

I see what I will need to locate... Also never realized there is a relay so will check those connections as well.
