Oil Temp Getting Too Hot While Sitting In Traffic

    Hello everyone,

I noticed that the oil temp of the F01 tends to fluctuate. I am not sure of the exact temperature value because the dashboard is virtual.

I can say that the oil temp is normally in the middle during most driving conditions. The oil temp moves slightly to the warm side while sitting in traffic. The car has 92k miles.

Should I look into an oil cooler change?

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Best Regards,
    Christopher

    Thanks for reaching out.

It goes a little past 250. I would say in the range of 250-260.

I noticed that when I'm in Comfort or Comfort Plus, the temperature tends to increase. But when I'm in Sport or Sport Plus, the temperature does not increase which does not make sense to me.

I also recently measured the oil level and the iDrive screen shows that the level is at max. This also does not make sense to me because if the oil is actually getting hot, won't this result in the oil burning up and ultimately lead to a reduction in the oil level?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Quick update guys, I recently changed the oil and the filter. The oil was a bit dirty (as expected) and the filter seemed to be in a decent shape.

Now, the temp is still a bit warm but not as hot as before.

Should I consider the oil intercooler replacement job? Does anyone have any experience with this type of replacement?

    Thanks,
    Christopher

Seeing how coolant temp runs 220-230, oil temp isn’t that bad, it’s is so stupid that bmw put this oil temp thing in and not a coolant temp. You don’t need to know the oil temp. New Chevy suburbans have more gauges than a bmw. Synthetic oil starts to have problems at a around 600 degrees so your no where near that.

Thanks for your reply. I actually contacted BMW about this issue and it turns out that the oil temp gauge on the digital dashboard is designed such that the middle is not actually the normal operating temperature. For those who have a digital dashboard, the middle is actually 225 degrees Fahrenheit. For those with a standard needle dashboard, the middle is 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's just one of those dumb design layouts that BMW uses to scare people.
