    Car Starts Then Dies (with P0170, P0173, P0335, P1188, P1189 present)

    Hey guys,
A few days ago my wife complained about having a problem starting a car. Then she said it stalled after few minutes of idling.

The next day I decided to check and drove it to work with no problem. But when I drove it back home it died while I was moving.
I was able to restart it and keep going...

Strange, but there was NO Check Engine light. But when I read it anyway it gave me 5 codes:

    P0170 - Powertrain
    Fuel Trim (Bank 1)

    P0173 - Powertrain
    Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 2)

    P0335 - Powertrain
    Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit

    P1188 - Powertrain
Fuel Control (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

    P1189 - Powertrain
Fuel Control (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

I left it parked for a couple of days and yesterday I decided to give it try.
The car started just fine but after few seconds of idling, it stalled.

Still NO Check Engine light but the same 5 codes.

    Where should I start looking?
    Bad Crankshaft Position Sensor?

    Thank you in advance,
    siny528i

PS. Recently I changed the Camshaft Position Sensor (P/N 12-14-1-703-221) that eliminated P0340 during the start. Code P1188 was already present there...

A bad crank sensor will cut the fuel supply so that would explanation all the fuel control errors.

    Too many...
Agree w/Jim. Loss of reference will cause all kinds of other issues; I'd ignore the fueling codes until you solve the crank sensor code. Sounds like you need a new sensor, though. Be sure to buy Genuine BMW or OEM for this. No Amazon/eBay specials. They do not work.

^^^ This. Aftermarket sensors are a real crapshoot.

You may want to clear all the codes. Then start it up and see what codes come back. Those P1188/11899 may be from a clogged up CVV fouling the fuel mixture.
I'm thinking that the Crank Sensor or its wiring/connection is bad. Do get a reliable BMW or OEM replacement, as the other guys have said.

    Thank you Jim, Ed, guys!

I am going to jump on it ASAP...
Already ordered Crankshaft Position Sensor (P/N 12-14-1-709-616) along with Position Sensor O-Ring (P/N 12-14-1-748-398).
    I hope I won't have to order a harness.

    I will keep you posted.

    Thanks again guys,

    Hey guys,

Yesterday at 243200 I cleared the codes and changed the Crankshaft Position Sensor (P/N 12-14-1-709-616) along with Position Sensor O-Ring (P/N 12-14-1-748-398).
    It was not that hard.

    So far so good...
    Let you know if anything.

    Thanks again,

    Hey guys,
    Quick update...

After 10 miles it came back with P1188...
Where would you recommend I should look now?

    Thank you in advance,

May want to look at the CVV system. Your '98 is the simple one - two tubes and the Valve. They do get clogged and it then sucks oil into the IM, thus fouling up the fuel mix.

Do you do a lot of short drives? If so, maybe a long run (30 minutes min) to get the engine hot and blow off/dry out any moisture and 'mayo' in there.

    Thanks Ed,
Yes, you're right. A lot of short trips. My work is 2 miles away.
I will look into it once weather will be better.

Btw, that CEL is gone from the dash. Code maybe still exist if I read it...

That 2-mile commute will do it. Yeah, that code is prolly stored - will pop up again next winter LOL. With your new crank sensor and some warmer weather to clean out some of that condensed "mayo", sounds like you're ready for spring driving!

Good one, Jim! Actually, will help use up that old gas in the tank before it turns to varnish. SINY -With a 2 mile commute, I'm thinking you only need to fill the gas tank about every two months.

    Guys,

I did some longer than usual trips for a few days in a row and it fixed it.
Mayo and codes are gone. But, you are also right, this code usually comes back winter time.

    Thanks again.
