    2006 Manual Short Throw

I bought a nice 2006 e46 with only 25K. the original owner put in a short shift but doesn't remember which brand. It seems REALLY, REALLY notchy and hard to shift. I've never had a short shift car... so not sure what it should feel like. It goes into all the gears, but it's not smooth by any means.
I've read sometimes guys change tranny fluid... or does it need adjusting? Just not sure what I could do to make it smoother...maybe buy a nice high quality one to replace it? go back to a OEM set up?
    any advice?
    thanks!
