E46 Cannot Sync EWS/DME rolling code

    Hello All,

I'm having a crank / no start issue with my E46 M3. I suspect it has to do with the DME/EWS rolling code verification because when I scan for the code I get "ERROR_ECU_REJECTED". And when I try to sync the codes I get an INPA error.

I've checked the pins for corrosion and the line between EWS/DME for continuity. All checks out. What reasons could there be for this? Odds that the chips fried in such a way that ONLY this function is affected seem quite low. Software version perhaps?

I have tried a litany of other things and this is the only outlier. please help!

    So nothing was swapped out?

You pressed F2 for rolling code reset?

The other window showing error ecu rejected is completely normal. Ews will not give you the secret ISN code.

I don't actually get to hit F2. or F1. The error comes up before I do that. Basically on my way from the main menu after hitting Shift+F6 for the resync.

I've been diving into this deeper on another forum, check out the progress here: https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...ckens.1287678/

Maybe you have some insight? Seems like something is blocking the coil trigger signal.

Open tool32 as administrator while connected to car, ign on

    Load MSS54DS0.prg

Run job "ews3_get_status" (it's about 1/3 of the scroll down). What are the results? This is important before continuing to the next step.

Run job "ews3_sync" to sync the rolling codes as needed.

Otherwise, contact me to do a temporary (or permanent) ews disable for testing.
I'm still not convinced it's an EWS issue.

Do you have rpm signal to diagnostics or on the cluster while cranking?

Goodness that other forum has suggestions that are all over the place.

Hello I too have the same issue and for the life of me cannot get my car started I have a 2001 325ci. I have even flashed my dme to delete the EWS and still would not start. Now I am considering just trying to clear the EWS

So why do you think it's an ews issue? EWS problems will throw EWS manipulation or invalid key codes. Period. The rest is not EWS issues.

You need to diagnose the problem first. If you have no rpm signal, the most common issue is a failed crankshaft position sensor.

I feel that it maybe. I am a newbie to all this and I would deeply appreciate any feedback on this issue. I will check for the rpm signal and get back to you. The reasons why I was thinking EWS was because on INPA
I looked under body and went to immobilizer. key was in contact with EWS but stated that the rolling codes were out of sync.
Also I remember that when I did try to start the car last it did something very odd when I removed the key. The car made a very rapid ticking and the speedometer and rpm tried to go below zero in sync with ticking.
