2009 BMW 750li - Cannot get an oil reading - Idrive says "inactive"

Hello,

I have a 2009 BMW 750li. When I access the Idrive to check my oil level, it says "inactive", so I am unable to check my oil. Can I assume that this is a faulty oil sensor? If the oil sensor is faulty, will the car still let me know when the oil level is low (i.e. message on the dash that says "oil is low"). My guess is that the car will not me know if I need oil because this is the function of the oil sensor. If I need to replace the oil sensor, should I just have the shop do it and change the oil at the same time?

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

I stopped working on my own cars in recent years. More disposable income and more complicated cars. Take it in for the oil change and have them fix it :-)
