I've went through installing (4) Alpine SPS 410 - the most common speaker upgrade into early e83 x3 in our family and here are my thoughts:
1. Top of the mounting flange to the bottom of the magnet height on these speakers is 46.2mm or 1.82", they are know to fit without any issues. Phoenix Gold RX 4CX should is virtually the same in terms of that dimension, Kicker KSC 4" is deeper and Focal A100 is even deeper than Kicker. Powerbass lists their S4002 model at 1.8" depth, worth looking into as well IMO.
2. Buy quite a bit of glue to fix plastic window sill piece that adheres to the top of the door panel. Some door clip mounts will come off the door panel when you pull it off as well - you will be gluing these too. I suggest instant grab adhesive because clamps won't do here - you need to have a panel upside down and press on it from the top (new bottom) in order for it to conform to the shape of that plastic piece you are gluing back to it (one that grabs to the door metal clips along the window).
3. Alpine are lower sensitivity that what comes out of there, you are likely to want to dial back bass setting on your head unit a click.
4. Do not waste money on rear door panel speakers, they made no difference in overall sound presentation.
5. Make sure you buy some new OE door clips before you dive into the project. I used gray type of foam insulator. Aftermarket stuff is junk.
Hope this helps somebody.
