bought a new shift knob because the old one has some wear on it. pulled out the old knob and almost hit myself in the face but I noticed that the shift knob is sewn onto the leather boot? and I cannot seem to take off the boot because it is sown on. Any suggestions? I have the OEM silver shift knob and am replacing it with a M sport knob because I hear it adds 1000 HP.

Yes, some of the BMW shift knobs are part of the boot, as is the case with my M3. So if you want to use that knob, you will need to buy a shift boot.

I ended up buying a shift boot from amazon. Has to pull the plastic frame from the old boot and place in the new boot by cutting in smalls holes into the plastic tangs. Then I just placed it back into the shift place.
