Hi.
Just changed my fuel pump and filter and need to change my relay as the engine is still randomly cutting out. Where is it in the pic.
cheers
Antony
You could have the main & FP relays installed inside the cabin, mounted above the glove box by the DME. Other cars will have them clipped to the fuse box. Location depends on production date, have to check both locations.

I know this is an older post but Im trying to identify the fuel pump relay. I am plannng on going to The Vintage and want to have a few just in case parts on hand for the drive, one of them being the fuel pump relay. I found the two relays above the glove box in front of the ECU. One is orange and the other is metal, the metal one has part number 12631708647. When I look this part number up I am finding it listed as a fuel injection relay or a diode relay. Is there a fuel pump relay and a fuel injection relay or are they the same relay just being called two different things? Is the orange one next to it the fuel pump relay? Sorry I cant seem to get a definitve answer as to what part or parts I should order. Thanks for the help.
Fuel Injection Relay: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...y/12631708647/
Diode Relay: https://www.bimmerworld.com/ssearch....ry=12631708647
Both of those relays are DME or ECU relays. They have a diode to prevent damage to the DME / ECU both terms describe the motronic control unit.
They can be metal in early cars and white in later cars.
The fuel pump relay is a standard relay with a resistor. If you have multiple orange relays in your fuse box then they are the same as the fuel pump relay.
The part numbers can be confusing as there were a number of part numbers for the different years of DME relay.
Ok thats good to know, thank you. So there was an orange relay to the left the metal one (diode) above/in the glove box, is that the actual fuel pump relay? I have an 88 M6.
That is probably the fuel pump relay. The way to be sure is to find terminal 87 on the relay and it should have a green/violet wire. That wire is the feed to the fuel pump.
I dont know if this helps, but this relay is listed in real oem as a fuel pump relay. Looks like it is unavailable from a few places, but some sites show it for $30 (NAPA and Pelican).

That is not the correct relay. It is a seven pin relay. The correct relay is a four pin relay. If you look at your fuse box cover you should see a marking for high beam light relay. This relay is the same as the fuel pump relay. If you were stuck you could remove this relay and use it for the fuel pump.
The low beam and foglight relay are also the same and could be used as well. Attachment 695267
You are probably right, when you look closley at the diagram the relay looks small and square. I dont know why real OEM lists the 7 pin as a fuel pump relay for the m6? The previous owner replaced a lot of relays on my car. I recall him telling me how hard it was to figure out the proper ones. He may have written them down in the paperwork he passedon to me.
Orange in the glovebox is the fuel pump relay..................I too have an 88 M6.
Somewhere there is a post/website with the topic " anatomy of a relay" and is quite informative.
