No Crank after Mechatronics Seal Replacement - 2004 530i

    Good afternoon,

I’ve done a good but it searching and could use some input from E60 gurus.

I replaced the transmission filter/seals/fluid on my 2004 530i. The first time I put it back together I did hit have the sleeve seal all of the way in, so I tried to start the car but the mechatronics was disconnected from the rest of the car. Tons of lights on the dash and warnings, and would not crank.

I dropped the filter again, dropped the mechatronics unit, checked the pins on it to make sure I didn’t damage anything, and reinstalled it all and am confident that the harness and mechatronics unit have a good connection now. I ensured the position of the gear selector cables before putting the pan back on - it is in the notch where it is supposed to be. I have filled it up with fluid and want to turn it on to complete the full process and it won’t even try to crank. No clicking from the starter like it wants to - just nothing happens. I’ve hooked up another car to make sure it isn’t a coincidental battery problem and nothing changed.

I have tried the pedal down for 30 seconds which has worked before but isn’t clearing the codes now. I removed the battery and shorted the leads together for 15 mins and that didn’t clear anything.

I don’t have access to INPA or anything more than a cheap harbor freight code reader.

If I had the harness in wrong the first time, is it possible that the car won’t let me try and start it until I get in there and clear the codes, or would it fix itself once it was plugged in properly (and I’ve just damaged something or have screwed it up again)?

Thanks in advance, wish me luck.

Maybe you are not in neutral. I did this years ago on my 535xi and did not get the shifter arm in the correct slot or alignment. I forget the exact details, though. Had to drop the pan again.

I knew that would be a potential cause so I made extra sure to verify that the slider and notch were aligned before I put the pan on the 2nd time.

TBH , I wouldn’t have bothered putting all the pan and oil back in until the starter can be heard , that’s just me .

Have you checked all the fuses in the car as a precaution ect , maybe the plug crossed pins and shorted un-intentionally.

I think something like this error will need inpa or ista to diagnose the issue if all fuses are ok .

I think I also had trouble seating the electronics plug on the outside. It was a tight fit on my Xi car.

I took it all apart again and was able to get the sleeve in even tighter, prying with a screwdriver carefully. Still nothing when I turn the key. I had doubts with the battery so I replaced. I have been trying to start the car now with the pan off - will the car crank over without the pan/fluid? I checked around for some sort of sensor that might keep it from cranking but did not see anything.

    I will check fuses.

Can you start in neutral? Did you try disconnecting the battery, waiting, and then reconnecting it? My sense, from having done decades of DIY work, is that the problem is something you did rather than a coincidence. I have been there many times myself over the years. The most likely thing to me is that the car does not think it is in park or neutral. The question is why. When I had an issue after doing mine, I posted over in 5series dot net and someone there helped me. At least a few years ago, that forum was much more active for E60/61 than here. Post back what you learn, if anything.

I agree, very likely I broke something or did not put it back properly. I let the car sit for a few days with the battery disconnected and the error messages did not go away.

I ordered an Ancel BM700 code reader and tried to clear the EGS fault codes yesterday. It said that the function was not supported on that model, which I think was its way of saying that it was unable to communicate with the EGS. It also said that it was not able to read the battery when I tried to register a new one, so I might have to make sure the software is up to date and contact Ancel to know for sure.

I am very confident that the physical connection is good now. I have dropped and replaced the mechatronics a few times, and have the sleeve very well seated/flush with the transmission housing, and the harness slips right in when I connect it.

I am thinking I damaged the mechatronics when removing it, and it will need to be replaced. I just want to find a way that I can verify that so I am not just throwing parts at it.

Check for bent pin(s) at EGS connector.
