I think my electric fan is going on but how can I be sure?

Open the hood and turn on the AC. It should come on.

I drove with AC for around 30 minutes today and temp gauge never budged from the middle area so I assume it is going on as it is supposed to do.

The Z4 has the same type of fan as the E46. Three wires going to it. Positive power, negative power and control. The control is a PWM signal from the DME. The easy way to test it is to get a scanner with BMW software or INPA. In INPA you can "activate" the fan at various speeds. Typical test speed are 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. This covers the the failure modes of the common problems with the fan controller.

The fan is PWM controlled and the fan will not be on every time the A/C is on. This method should never be used for diagnosing a fan on these engines
Go into INPA and trigger the fan manually - its in german on mine, e-lufhting or something
