The Z4 has the same type of fan as the E46. Three wires going to it. Positive power, negative power and control. The control is a PWM signal from the DME. The easy way to test it is to get a scanner with BMW software or INPA. In INPA you can "activate" the fan at various speeds. Typical test speed are 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. This covers the the failure modes of the common problems with the fan controller.
