code P0012

been doing several things to my 2008 335i water pump ,struts and such.Iv been having a service engine soon light come on and limp mode. code P0012 changed both vanos solenoids with bmw replacements,checked to make sure cage was on oil filter cap checked and double checked i didn't mix the vanos wires up(top is the straight connector,bottom is the 90 degree pretty sure that's right) new bmw battery coded in.The code reads camshaft position over retarded i'm really at a loss most of the reading iv done refers to vanos solenoids which are new,car does not run rough to speak of

well against my better judgement i purchased a autozone cam sensor,put it in the intake side and no limp mode and no engine symbol.Drove it about 30 miles so far so good,first aftermarket sensor iv ever used we shall see.

Sleeper, who do you think makes cam sensors for Autozone, most probably the same people who make cam sensors for BMW. I wouldn't worry about it, but the next time use FCP for good aftermarket parts.

IMG_0904.jpgthats who i usually use but the wife needed the car,we lost our truck day before christmas eve due to a guy texting and hit her from behind at a red light.I digress, well today she was driving it and engine symbol came on went in limp mode ran the codes and this is what i get seems to still be referring to intake vanos not sure what direction to go now both solenoids new,new intake cam sensor.

read a service bulletin stating looking at the filter cap cage,i checked that and it was still there albeit was loose and rattled around figured that was normal,might change it just to be sure,and then it referred to cam ledge bearing issue,bet that's not fun

anyone know what year they changed the cam seal design on the 335i?iv got an 08 and not sure if they were still using the metal sealing rings.I called a well known indy shop today to ask about approximate price to change the cam trays and sealing rings and was told that they dont think thats the problem on my year model,and mentioned that they would change the cam actuator.Im sensing that it does have something to do with oil pressure they also said one of the first things they would do was change the oil.

thought i would update my thread,ended up changing the filter cap,checked the vanos filters they were clean,changed them just because,and changed the oil and filter used liqui moly 5-40 we stay pretty hot down here,cleard the code and so far about 200 miles code has not returned.Pretty sure it was the oil change that corrected it, albeit i'm not thinking its a permanent fix.i have been collecting the correct tools incase code returns then im pretty certain cam ledges.
