All other bulbs work for exterior lighting, and wiggling the wiring harness at the trunk hinge does not cause the light to flicker...
What could be the cause of the tail light fault?
The bulb out system works off resistance so bad or dirty contacts can make the bulb out indicator come on even when all the bulbs are working, the trunk harness is only supplying power to what ever is in the trunk lid inspecting the wiring harness is more effective then wiggling wires, it’s probably a dirty connection
@ jclausen: he is not talking about the CCM warning in the cluster, he posted the tail light is out.
check fuses 4,5,15,20 https://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e34/e34_89.pdf use a multimeter and test if power goes to the tail light bulb. Swap bulb holder with bulb from left to right tail light and see if the fault moves.

Thanks for the input. Turns out, the fault was a combination of poor or less than perfect electrical contacts, such that a given bulb would work in one socket, but not necessarily another. Cleaning all contacts starting at each bulb, socket, lens, wiring harness, fuse, and LKM solved the problem.
