Educate Me On F10s

I'm looking to buy my wife a 2012 BMW 535i M Sport. I'm more of an e36 3 series person, so really don't know much about the 5 series especially the F10s. I know it's got the N55 and it has some mods on it now. Is there anything that usually fails on the car itself that I should look out for? Is there a good aftermarket presence for parts other than performance? Just basically educating a new buyer on what they should look for.

They are pretty good cars except for the usual plastic coolant lines that leak, oil leaks and rubber mounts cracking. Door grabs will melt in hotter climates.

Be aware that these newer cars get minimal maintenance. I’d just replace the valve cover as a precaution to prevent a common issue of the PCV clogging which will cause a leak from many gaskets.

2012 535i --- had one. Thermostat and water pump have been failing items for many --- usually around 75-85,000 miles.

I have just replaced the waterpump and the valve cover gasket this week. Oil filter housing gasket is the next maintenance I'll do.

Are these motors any tougher to work on (space-wise) than say an M62 in an E38?

The N55 isn’t too bad. The turbo V8s are a wh0rebag.

Good to know! I appreciate all the responses. The seller stopped responding to me, so unable to get that car. I like the looks of the M Sports now though, so hopefully i'll find another one
