Can I permanently damage ECU with INPA reads? ApiResultText: Error #28

    Hi,

I'm trying to change the paramaters of a new battery on my 2007 328i Coupe, E92. From 80AH to 100AH. I'm having problems with Windows 10 and the K+DCAN cable.

I have a Virtual Machine Windows 10 laptop. I have installed Mike's Easy BMW tools on it. I bought a K+DCAN cable with a button for 7 and 8 pins. I was told to have the button out for my 7/2007 manufactured E92. I think it means pins 7 and 8 connected.

My problem is that I don't see a PORT heading on the device manager. Installing the cable's device drivers, it adds a "Universal Serial Bus Controller". I can manually add a COM port, COM3. I'm told that COM1 is already used.

If I plug in the cable to the ODBII port and use INPA is look at registered batteries is there any chance of screwing up the ECUs in my car?

I tried it once and it gave me the following error:

    ApiResultText: Error #28
    IFH-0018: INITIALIZATION ERROR
API job error no no such result!
    Continue script processing?

You need the switch to the other side, keeping pins 7&8 UNbridged for your car.

You also need to make sure the cable latency in the cable device manager is set to 1 or 2ms.

COM port number itself doesn't matter as long as it matches what is written in the obd.ini file inside C:\ediabas\bin\ folder. You can edit either device manager or obd.ini to make them match.

Thanks every one. The word unbridged means the 7 and 8 lines are not connected right? Can you tell me what that means technically, I am using K lines or DCan lines? I think they have different data speeds. How do I set the latency? Unfortunately I don't see any PORT in Window 10 Device Manager.

Correct, pins 7&8 should not be connected for your car, which allows the cable to work on dcan mode. It's not only just data speeds that is different.

I suppose you'll have to provide a screenshot of your Device Manager

"Yes" and "No". The important thing to remember when using INPA, is that it's designed to be used by engineers at BMW, not technicians at BMW dealers or members of the general public. Because of that, there's very few warnings given to the user by INPA and.the assumption is that you know what you're doing. Most of the time it is perfectly safe, when reading and clearing DTC's, "history memory", "shadow memory", etc, etc. Using the actuation functionalities is normally safe, but just be sure that you understand what the actuation is, as some of them have the potential to catch you out. INPA also allows you to read, write and erase memory on certain ECU's (along with making cryptographic data edits, etc) and I would personally advise that you leave this alone (these are normally indicated by a grey "pop-up" dialogue box). I've been using INPA and writing my own files for use with it, for nearly 20 years now and yet every so often it catches me off guard! It's an extremely powerful tool and once mastered, it can be a lot quicker, easier and more informative than other programmes such as Rheingold or ISTA-D, but caution must be exercised...
