Hi I am looking at a 2009 x5 with 100k miles. Anything I should be checking on this or anything to watch out for? I have had a 740il for 15 years (well a 1996 for 15 years, and a 2001 for 4 years) thanks

I have a 2009 BMW x5 3.0si with 134K miles on it. I have been the sole owner so I am well acquainted with the issues these cars have.
You did not mention if you have the 6cyl diesel, 6cyl gas, or 8cyl gas.
You should find out if the seller has all the repair and maintenance records.
I would spend the $100-$150 for a reputable Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) to be done.
Common problems are the ignition coils going bad, water pump failure, alternator issues, many people have the starter fail, but I have not hit that yet.
Gaskets! Check the intake gasket, eccentric shaft gasket, oil cooler gasket. These gaskets WILL fail. I am on my third intake gasket.
The dreaded oil pan gasket! A $50 gasket that will cost you between $1,600 to $2,400 to fix a good BMW indy or BMW dealer.
Make sure all recalls have been done. There are airbag recalls, fuel pump related recalls, and some part with the alternator.
VANOS solenoids, I am on my third set of those. Even with me changing the oil every 7,500 miles, they still failed.
Those are the quick things from top of my head.
The biggest pain are the gaskets. They weather, get brittle, and start leaking.
Other than that, I think the car is fairly reliable. My engine pulls strong and the transmission has been trouble-free for me.
Let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to answer whatever I know.
I will say this, if you buy a BMW, sign-up at FCP Euro and get your parts and maintenance items from there.
You get lifetime replacements on everything and this has saved me thousands of dollars already. Literally several thousand. I love FCP Euro.
Thanks for all of the info! I did start buying all of my part from them and they have been great. Can’t beat a lifetime warranty on a quality part. I have had some cheap parts with lifetime warranties and after they failed I learned my lesson.
I did end up with a 2013 x5 M-sport, with the 6 cylinder turbo. Black on black with a 36k warranty, and 89k miles.
