Can anyone tell me what this part is?
It's the airbox "suction tube" for US cars. #11 https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=13_1708
Next time your airbox is out, remove the restrictor in that opening.
If the problem is just that it's not sticking on to the air filter assembly you could get some double sided 3M tape from an auto parts store and use that to get it to stay in place.
Yes it no longer is staying together. What do you advice on fixing this? Replace or try to tape/clamp it back? I want to fix it right, but I haven't been able to find the part number. Thanks for that Braymond.
So happy to help, Staci. The same thing happened to mine and is pretty common on old e36es. If you go to an auto parts store, go to the tape/glue section, and look for a type of double-sided tape. The one I found is by 3M. It is a small roll of stuff in a small box. All you have to do is apply the tape around the inner lip of the air duct part that is broken. Then you simply stick it back on to the airbox. Just make sure it snaps back around fully. It will stay in place just fine and can be removed again if you ever need to.
Easy fix, and the tape should cost less than ten dollars.
I highly doubt a bunch of jank tape is the fix.
Are you installing it correctly or is it physically damaged?
They deform over time. jank tape is fine because it's before the filter.
Alternatively, you can find a new snorkel (go for the M3GT ram air one!) and wait for that one to deform.

I am not sure why it won't stay together. That part new is $80.
They aren't exactly easy to get on. I've never seen one deform, so my thoughts are still; install in correctly. I don't subscribe to the jank tape method. It's tacky.
If yours is truly damaged, I would look for a used one. $80 for new is too much.
Maybe a spring clip or hose clamp helps (?)

Aint that the truth. I went to buy a new one for my sedan a while back and nearly spit out my coffee when I saw the price. The Euro snorkels are $170-200+ now. I'm kicking myself because two years ago I literally threw away a Euro piece after storing it in my garage for 5+ years. I wish I had saved it.
I am going to take a closer look & see if a clip or spring might fix it. I thought that was a lot of $$ for a piece of plastic.
