    Do I want a turbo M50?

Hi all, have a '92 325is with the non-vanos M50. Had the car for 18 years and now considering going turbo or swapping in an S50.

Mainly the car is used for canyon runs, monthly auto-x's and the occasional small road trip.

If I would go turbo, I would like to build a system with the following qualities:

    - Excellent reliability
    - Minimized turbo lag, suitable for auto-x
    - Little or no cutting body work
    - Decent fuel mileage

So please let me know your thoughts.

    Cheers

S50 swap is probably cheaper in the long run. For a reliable and suitable turbo build, look to have a budget of at least $10k.

You'll be more competitive in autocross keeping it stock...

would take the S50 with the stock tune over a budget turbo setup, if you can find one.

I would vote turbo with a small fast spooling 57mm turbo. An m50 with 15 lbs of boost will shit all over an S50.

It definitely would, however reliability comes down to many factors and if Op is on a shoestring budget, reliability goes out the window hehe

He never said he wasn't haha. But I did say 'if' he's on a shoestring budget, S50 would be cheaper in the long run.

If you can weld and fit pipe, you can do it for about $5-6k. Paying someone else for that is going to add up. If you do mild boost, say less than 1 bar, don't do burnouts at every stop sign, should be reliable. So, reliability is related to your driving style. Remember, everything downstream of the crankshaft will be under the additional stress. As far as lag, you should still have stock response until boost starts to come on. You don't need a turbo for canyon runs or auto-x, but it sure is fun for open road pulls.
