    Fuel Pump Replacements

Finally got around to getting the 80 733i I picked up this past spring into the garage. Both fuel pumps are shot so I ordered some replacement parts, along with a spool of 3/16 ID fuel hose, but I'm not finding there are two size hoses on this car and I have questions.

On some advice, I ordered a carter pump for the in tank lift pump, along with the correct intake sock, that went into the old tank housing without much trouble.

Picked up the below high pressure pump off Amazon, it matches the old hp pump very closely except the intake nozzle is a smaller diameter than the original one, not sure if this will cause issues or not.

Now right before the pump intake is this weird...thing...I have no idea what it actually is but I'm guessing its either there to make a clean right angle or possibly serves as a reservoir of some sort to queue up the fuel coming from the tank and going to the HP pump. I don't see it as a spare part on places like rockauto and I'm wondering if its a necessity or if it can (or should) be eliminated?20210116_194420.jpg

Is there a handy adapter to go from the 3/16 fittings that all the new stuff seems to use to whatever the larger diameter fittings are on the output from the lift pump assembly? The lines that run from the lift pump down the front of the tank to the disc thingy and from there to the old HP pump are a larger diameter and I have no idea what size that is. The output from the old HP pump and both fittings on the fuel filter as well as the hard line that goes forward all seem to be 3/16 so I'm wondering if the whole system can just be fitted with that and just go with the one diameter line? I was able to get the 3/16 line onto the lift pump frame inside the tank to take the output from the lift pump itself so maybe I just need to do the same thing here at the HP pump?

Thanks very much. Hopefully once I get this sorted out, I'll find that the electrical and relay part of the equation is still working.

Think I may have the answer about the weird disc shaped thing...fuel pump damper that apparently most people remove.

So I guess I just need to get a replacement line in there from the lift pump output to the HP pump input and press on.

I have removed them. Just more places to leak...and you need 5/16" hose. Make sure EFI rated!
