Doors locking on their own - E46

Occasionally my car will lock itself before I get a chance to even hit the button on the remote. I just purchased the key and programmed it. All functions work properly. It’s my only remote. Is this an electrical problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Scan the car for faults on the locking system

    Did this locking happen since:
    you've had the car?
    You've programmed the key?
    OR
Did you have the key in your pocket?
I have experienced and read about the car unlocking and rolling back the sunroof usually during a storm...

Could be a problem with the locking system or G5 unit.
On the forum here there was a guy that wanted just that type of feature.
My thought was maybe it can be coded into the unit.
IDK, btw had you changed any of the door lock actuators?

This started happening on my E34 too, and from what I can see, it occurs occasionally on BMW (search the forum for confirmation)! I think it might be up to central locking relay.

I just purchased the car and programmed a key for it. Doesn’t matter where the key is, pocket, hand etc. I’ve been holding the key by the ring and watched the car lock itself.

Have not changed any actuators. The central locking system works fine besides this issue.

BMW (automatic/ no coding involved) has a feature where when car door is unlocked but the door has not been opened say (I think) 2 min? The car will lock back...this saftey is to avoid leaving the car unlocked. We rarely use it because we have the fob and instantly we turn our backs to the car we are simultaneously clicking the lock button on the fob.

Since you just got the car, check for an aftermarket alarm. Many lock the car automatically. Usually installed under the dash on the driver's side.

No aftermarket alarm. And the car has locked itself within seconds of closing the door.

I will try and plug in and scan the system for faults

I used to own a Range Rover (back when BMW built them) and I had software to reprogram the central locking. Does BMW Scanner 1.4.0 offer the same feature?

It’s the driver door latch mechanism failing. It’s detecting the key has been turned to the lock position, so it’s locking the doors. All doors lock if you manually lock the drivers door with the key. It’s not repairable, the sensors are molded into the plastic. The entire latch must be replaced.

I have the opposite problem..my passenger door sometimes doesn’t unlock.
Not with the key nor with the handle itself nor the center button It works whenever it feels like it. But it’s only the passenger door.
