USB OBD and Ignition / Battery signal needed for DIS or ISTA?

Long story short I am trying to run the VANOS test for an S62 but running in to trouble.

I've spent the last week digging through forums and managed to get DIS, INPA, and ISTA all set up and working. The problem is I cannot get to the dms menu to run the diagnostic test for the VANOS. I read somewhere that it's because the software needs to see the ignition / battery signal? I don't see the dots for them when I run INPA. Is this true, and what type of adapter do I need to achieve this? I just have one or two different cheap K+DCAN connectors, one of which I installed a switch on to bridge pins 7+8.

    Also FWIW:

Windows 7 (dual boot on the same laptop, two drives)
    Ediabas 6.4.3
    INPA / DIS v44 / DIS v57

    Windows 10
    Ediabas 7.4.0
    ISTA 4.27

All the cables I have use some variation of the FTDI chipset.

    Any help appreciated, thanks!

I made some progress and I was able to get to the dms ABL in DIS but it looks like it's just hanging at "please wait"

Bump. Still having issues, any suggestions? I've tried just about everything I can find digging through old threads here and in other places.
