I have a 1995 M3 that is used exclusively to drive to the track, on the track and home from the track. I am adding a 4pt or 6pt roll bar/cage so putting 4 wheels inside of the car along with everything else I bring will be next to impossible. I am not that good at tetris.
I need something that is very easy to install and remove. I don't have a budget for this. I just want to get 4 wheels on the roof so what do you guys recommend?
I would recommend against it and would say to pickup a small tire trailer instead.
I have stuffed 6 wheels/tires in my e36 with a rollbar so its definitely doable but a tire trailer makes track like MUCH easier to be able to unhook and drive.
I'm in the same boat. I'm more "too old for this shit" and am sick of getting my wheels out all the time. I'm looking at Trailex trailers for future use.
I agree with olemiss540, you might be able to get away with a tire trailer if you are still arrive-and-drive but that means adding a hitch which is a whole different set of challenges.
If you have a look at the Cleetus McFarland Youtube channel, they use some suction cap roof racks on their cars for race week and such. Seem to be pretty sturdy and minimal issues with them. You'll have to hunt through the videos to find it, but definitely a suction cup rack system would work. Just not sure if the E36 roof could support 180lbs of wheels + roof racks.
Back when I did this I used a Thule 400XT rack with Thule Fit Kit 174 (Thule part numbers are specific to coupes, will not fit sedans). Then I put a threaded rod through all four wheels with a factory spare tire holder (part no.:71151180625) and wingnuts on each side. Then the 4 wheels/tires were essentially one unit that I ratchet strapped to the roof-rack. It worked well for the one season of HPDE I used it. I knew I would purchase a trailer / tow rig the next year so I didn't want to invest in a small tire/tools trailer. If you plan to drive to/from the track long term, I'd invest in a small trailer as others have suggested.
