Carburettor route. Double carbs look tasty! Looking for some info and help.

    Hello,
the E30 threads aren't much help when it comes to carburettor questions, so i'm hoping for some help from you guys.

i've got an E30 316(m10b18) with the infamous Pierburg 2BE carburettor, that im looking to swap.

I've decided that i want to keep the car for what it is, so im not doing any engine swaps.

The carb im currently loking at is the Weber 32/34 DMTL as it fits without any further work needed.
Having said that these double carb setups started looking really tasty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJnObhD81iY

What i want to know is:
How big of a power gain do you get with these setups?
    vs
How does the daily driveability suffer? (Fuel consumption and sound) I wouldn't like my car incredibly loud.

Do you think there is a point in a double Weber 32/34 or should i start looking at bigger carbs? I'd like to buy my first 32/34 and then add on another one later maybe.

    Hi Ivan,

i drive a mk2 golf as a daily with the 1.6 Liter, i came from the Pierburg 2E2 that started to crap out. i put in a Weber 32/34 and it made quite the difference. I have fairly more top end power and less issues. Just a little less torque below 3k rpms. fuel consumption stayed the same, got slightly lower on long autobahn cruises (120-150 km/h) where i am able to hit lower than 7 liters /100 km. On a daily base i need around 8,5 Liter / 100km in the summer. About 9-9,5 in the Winter.

Double 32/34 will not make sense in my opinion. Maybe go 32/34 now, and safe some cash to get a set of 40 DCOE later.

I'd vote for the 32/34 over the pierburg any day. I'd expect the gains of the 32/34 to be in the 10% range, so maybe 7-10 horsepower on a stock cam.... A set of DCOEs combined with a hot cam will net xou a hell of a lot more power for sure, but may also affect drivability in the lower rpms.

I had a 2002 with dcoe 40s, schrick 292 cam and high compression pistons. Power and drive ability were really pretty good, esp once I dialed in the jetting in a bit. Intake noise is a fair bit louder.

Single 2 barrel downdraft Weber (32/36 DGAV I think) would make the most sense to me if you don’t change anything else.

The 38 DGES/DGMS looks pretty tempting too (synchronous opening rather than progressive).

Accurate jetting is still pretty important for smoothness at all rpm ranges though.
