1992 325i Chocking and stalling pretty bad

Hi Guys.

So I have a 1992 325i that I use occasionally. Yesterday I took it out and I drove approximately 90 miles without any issues, the car was running well. I stopped at a gas station to put gas in it, I filled it up with Premium Gas. When I got in and started the engine I heard a big POW sound and the engine started chocking and stalling pretty bad and not responding to throttle. When pressing a little the gas pedal the car chocked even more. Sometimes it respond to throttle and sounds normal for a bit but it then starts chocking again immediately . If I let it idle the engine stays on but constantly chocking and stalling. If I try to move it (I have a manual transmission) The engine dies. It will start again but same rough behavior.

Any ideas what can be bad, could it be a bad Sensor, bad Cat, or something? and how I can diagnose the issue? What's weird is that it was running fine just until I put the Gas in it. I don't think its bad gasoline because none of the other cars in the gas station had any problem.

Any help and tips on how to diagnose the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a hose blew off, check for damaged vacuum lines. If you can't find any, smoke test the engine for vacuum leaks. If this is a large vacuum leak then it may cause engine errors that may be misleading if you were to do the "stomp test" to look for codes.

If your car is stuck at a gas station you can get a AAA membership to get an inexpensive tow. There are different membership levels that can get you a longer distance tow for little money.

If you get the car running again and it was something like a hose blew off, I would suggest you put injector cleaner because they are probably leaking.

If the above turns out to be true then I would suggest to get a new set of ignition coils. Here's a link to get 8 new ones (cheaper than buying 6). Equally if your coils are very old or original then get them anyway.

Hi Eric.

Thanks for the suggestions. Luckily I had roadside assistance with my Insurance and they covered the tow. I will take a look at the hoses to see if any of them blew. Not sure how to "smoke test the engine".

I'll let you know if I find anything.
