I have noticed that some of these cars have chrome molding under the pop-out windows and some do not. My '81 IS does, but my '82 does not. My '81 has rust that started there, and my '82 does not. That extra molding is crap and traps moisture, there is no reason to keep it.

Having owned a '81 320i, non "s", with regular comfort seats, those aren't comfort seats.
All things considered I would approach this car with caution and have a very close look at other rust areas beyond what is visible around the trim. There are many newer 3 series with more driving appeal and less rust.

I bought the car today for what I felt was a reasonable price.

Ya know, I simply like the car, and I have an small army of college age buddies and all their own projects willing to help me clean it up and tackle this rust.

I'm stoked to make memories with this car, and pepper you guys with questions for the foreseeable future.

Welcome! I bought my E21 not too long ago. Similar situation, not the smartest move but if you really like the car it's worth it.

Good call, OP! I was looking at that same KSL listing, though without any real intent to purchase. Looked like a fun little banger. Glad to know it went to someone in the community!

Bring that thing out to UMC for some track laps; once spring shows up it should be a ripper on the mountain passes too. Holler if you want to meet up for a drive when it’s reasonable.

congratulations, it is an amazing hobby, and they are great daily drivers, and very thankfull cars actually, they like to be worked on.

You will enjoy it for a long time, and heck...they will only increase in value....well untill there is no more gasoline right?

best of luck and please keep us posted, we love freaks of the same kind
