Hi
Does anyone know how to save some weight on headlights? Are there plastic headlight lenses (outside) that would replace the original glass ones?
I gotta ask. What is the goal here? I don't think there are plastic lens to replace the Euro units. You could always go with the crappy US spec but that seems like a downgrade IMO. Couldn't tell you the weight difference either. If this is a race car just install a delete plate and/or possibly air ducts. If it is a street car there is no performance to be gained here.
The car is a motorsport car and will be used in rally. For a street car it will not make sense but in that usecase weight it in fact an important part of performance. Weight distribution is about 54% front 46% rear therefore that question occurs.
that does not make a big difference, sound insulation removal brings a lot https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ight+reduction
Floor covering front 19.4 lb
Floor covering rear 1.4 lb
Trunk mat 4.3 lb
Trim panel right 1.3 lb
Luggage compartment pan 0.9 lb
Insulating mat 3.4 lb
Trim panel left 1.2 lb
Headlining 3.7 lb
Headliner, sunroof 3.3 lb
Rear window shelf 6.3 lb
Sound insulating engine hood 1.6 lb
Hood 34.2 lb, a carbon hood https://edenhofer-motorsport.de/prod...36-motorhaube/

cpl. headlight left or right has a weight of 5.5 lb
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Yes insulation removal is the best way to loose fast and cheap weight. Therefore all these parts allready gone + every unnecessary bracket etc.
Fiberglass hood will follow maybe.
That is the reason why headlights come in play.
Someone should be able to send you some plastic headlights for free from the US. Though may take a while to get to Cologne.
