A 2001 740 had the v8, and some had timing chain guides problems. A 2003 540 looks to have the same motor, a v8. On the 540, does this v8 suffer from the same chain problems as the 7 series?. Curious because I'm looking at a 5 and wondered. Any thoughts?

Yes, the 5 and 7 both have the guides issue.
One of the reasons I went with the 750, didn’t want to do that job again. It isn’t bad, just tedious.

Exactly the same motors.
And if you need vanos with new Beisan o-rings installed I have them.

Thanks, but just asking the question so far, not bought a car yet.

As stated the 2001 740i/iL and 2003 540i have the same M62TUB44 motor with Vanos.
Just did the timing chain guides and every thing on the front of my M62 and it was not super fun.
Make sure if you do it you rent or buy the best timing tool and not eBay/Chinese made stuff.

Even with the best tools, this job is never fun. Plan on 40-60 hrs under the hood depending on how much of a perfectionist you are or how many other "why not replace" parts you find. Basic cost parts only is about $1k, but if you replace all the worn stuff as you go in and come back out again, I'd say closer to $2k. Good opportunity to re-do the cooling system.
