87 E30 325is Going Crazy

So i've talked about this problem before and it's driving me crazy.

When I'm driving down the freeway, the car decides to jerk sometimes when it is running at a constant RPM. It happens mainly when the engine is warm and it virtually never happens when it is cold. When it jerks the check engine light would come on for a second or it will start blinking.

Another problem that occurs not so often as the jerking is the car dying while it's driving. It's as if I turned off my ignition while its running. To get it back running I put the key in the off position and turn it back on.


I also have a video of my car acting up on the side of the road. In the video I keep the RPMs at 2k, but you can see and hear it dip for less than a second and then go right back to 2k RPM. If you look at the MPG gauge and temp gauge it looks like they are having a seizure. The check engine light is also on but when I do a stomp test it gives me "1444" which means that there are no codes.

I've replaced:
*Spark plug wires
*Spark plugs
*Cap and rotor
*External fuel pump
*Fuel pump relay
*Fuel filter
*ICV
*DME relay

I also did a valve adjustment and checked for vacuum leaks, which there are none.

Whoa, that’s weird! The diagnostics in the E30 are pretty rudimentary, as you know. The odd thing is that the stomp test shows no issues. My recommendation is to get the car to a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers and knows the E30. Try www.bimrs.org to find a shop in your area. There’s a great shop in La Jolla owned by Carl Nelson. It’s phone # is 858-488-1555. Carl has been working on bimmers before the wheel was invented (/s).

Btw, I owned a 1985 325e (don’t laugh) for 15 years.
