    E39 2003 530i engine fail safe

    i have a 2003 530i msport that keeps going into engine fail safe! I turn it off and it goes out, then I drive it a little hard and it comes back! It will still drive, just runs a little different, less power mostly. The engine light also came on last time but went out when I turned the car off and re started it! I am a diyer unless I don’t have time, I work allot. I have the Bentley books off I can get some advice. It may take me a little bit to get back to anyone trying to help, I’m at work over 80 hours most weeks so please be patient with me! I’m also new to forums, thank you so much for Ben merges to! You guys have helped me so much!!!

    The first step in diagnosing a problem is to scan the engine computer (DME) for codes. Get the OBDFusion app for your smartphone or tablet. Then search this forum for threads on OBDFusion. You’ll need a communications adapter that plugs into the port under the dash. However, OBDFusion scans only the DME.
    It sounds like your car has an automatic transmission as what you’re describing is called “limp mode.” The DME and the automatic transmission computer (EGS) communicate and under certain conditions jointly force the car into limp mode. The DME reduces engine power while the EGS forces the transmission to run in 4th gear. This is to protect the engine and/or transmission from damage. You’ll likely have to take the car to a reputable shop that specializes in bimmers to have the EGS and other commuters scanned.
    Just out of curiosity, have you had the automatic transmission fluid and filter changed? They need to be changed every 50k-60k miles.

    Thank you, I’m trying to find a good obd2 tool, need a Specific one that I can buy at a nearby parts store because I want to try to work on my car this weekend and get it figured out if anyone could help me with the exact name of one that I could buy it in a parts store That would be good. I am trying to buy my son the laptop with the software for our BMWs for Christmas so I don’t wanna go buy one now if I can get away with an OBD two then I will

    On the E-39 all you need is an old laptop with a USB connection, nothing special IMO. INPA will work just fine, and you can find it on the web for free. Most cables are 20 bucks and make sure you get one with the switch for pin 7&8, otherwise you will have connection issues.
