    2011 328xi coupe won’t start

Hey so I have a 2011 328i xdrive coupe manual. 100k miles. Recently I was driving and was sorta getting into it getting on the interstate switching from 3rd to 4th gear something happened engine revved super high then lost almost all engine power. Speed and rpms were slow to climb. Would have pedal all the way down and car would barely move. Eventually when coming to a stop at light the car had very rough idle and almost like it wanted to stall. Stopped in parking lot cut it off. Gave it sometime tried to start and took a few times eventually kicked over. Made it home and was night so was gonna check on it in the AM.

Next day would not start at all. Tried replacing fuel pump made sure it had plenty of fuel but no luck. Replaced battery had it programmed still nothing. Took it to shop they tried cam sensor didn’t work. Now they are saying there’s a 50/50 chance the vanos solenoid will fix it. They said if not will replace whole vanos unit which would run 3-4K they said. Which would almost make me consider walking away from the car altogether.

Has anyone experienced this issue and if so how was it resolved? Any information is greatly appreciated!

Are you located in Richmond, VA? If you are go to www.bimrs.org to find a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers. The shop that worked on your car likely doesn’t have the proper proprietary BMW software to properly scan all of the car’s computers.

Sounds like somebody who has no experience with BMW's is working on that car and just throwing parts at it before testing.

Stop throwing parts at it! Have it diagnosed by a dealership, or a BMW specialist shop. The N52 is a very easy engine to diagnose and repair, if you know what you're doing.

They replaced the vanos solenoid. Didn’t fix issue. Said it will sometimes start but with a very rough idle. Then insisted they need to take the valve covers off to see what parts might need possibly replaced said timing related issues. I’ve taken my car to this shop in the past. who specializes in bmw, mini, volks. etc. they are sorta pricey but I believe do loyal and good work. I’m just confused as to they still haven’t found a resolution. After the multiple “solutions” that haven’t worked I’m am now tied up money and time wise considering this is my daily.

I am stupid to this stuff which is why I am coming to forums for help and advice so I greatly appreciate it all.

“””multiple faults stored for check engine, vehicle would not start due to dead battery - we recommend replacing and registering the battery (II) replace coils and plugs (missfires) (II) and clear faults - please be aware further work will be needed but we must first eliminate some faults UpDaTe*** camshaft faults came back after a test drive - we recommend replacing the vanos solenoid valves, preforming an oil change and resetting adaptations(II) note that the missfires did not return at this time (5mile td)“””

They definitely do. Specialize in it. Just seems like something small is being overlooked (I hope)

So dead battery kept the car from running properly? Sure it can, I would hold off on the coil and plugs unless your are over 100k miles then plugs only. I would test each coil before throwing them away, as it sound like to me that is just shotgunning parts at a miss-fire code.

You will need to have 10 post before the forum will allow you to up load to it, but you can link a picture from another location with either a cut and paste, or at the top of the reply box is a globe and chain, that's a link button.
