So...I am teaching the 16 year old how to drive ...

yes, in my E38...and she is doing a slightly-aggressive circle and she casually asks, "so dad, is this how you do a burnout?"

Yes...unless she is stalking me she isn't going to learn where that traction control button is.

Oh, and to reduce the stress...I took some pistachios and a can of mineral water. The kid kept eyeing me as I sipped every so often and I could tell she wanted to gun it or something. She played it cool. She waited and actually hit the brakes when I was expecting the opposite.

Gonna be the death of me I tell ya!

I've been teaching my younger brother (still on his 6 month permit) how to drive, in my E38. But he's not nearly as adventurous as your kid, haha! He's still very cautious and I guess has a right to be with such a big car. He says it's his favorite car to drive out of all of the cars he's driven so far though, so I guess that lends some credence to my wrenching...

Ha Ha! I taught all my kids in the red e34 pictured below. My original Bimmer, purchased in 1995 in Frankfurt, Deutschland. My first daughter was born after we got the car to the states, and was driven home from the hospital in that car, then she learned to drive it and then she overheated the engine and blew the head gasket. A complete car rebuild later, the other three have earned their license in it and it has been everyone's first car. Other than the head gasket at 242,000, that car has been a trooper. Now at 256,000 and still impresses people Just today my youngest got a compliment when she went to the Wendy's drive thru. The kid serving the fries loved the car. He knows his Bimmers I guess.

On the subject of instruction, all my kids were conservative, then my youngest came along. She thought it was crash-em up derby out there. After several shouting matches about being slow and careful, and a few moments scaring herself, she has become a great driver. Find what scares her the most and do that. Highway driving was mine's achilles heal. Once I took her on the freeway she calmed down a lot, she wanted to end the lesson early.

I remember those days! I taught my kids on automatic but quickly transferred them to our stick shift cars we had at the time - E39 for the older one, E46 for the younger one. They do get to drive the boat once in a while but have moved to their own sticks.

Enjoy it because time goes fast.
