Angry 2007 335i valve cover gasket replacement

Hey guys turns out I need to replace my valve cover gasket, called up
bmw and they said it’ll cost $2200, includes valve cover gasket, new valve cover and labour. Am I crazy to go forward with this?

$2200 is on the high end. I believe my dealer quoted me $1200 a little over two years ago for just the gasket. This is a job that a tech can do in a couple hours. The parts cost is around $500 online. They'll be making an insane profit.

I would look elsewhere or consider doing it yourself. The job really isn't that hard. It doesn't require specialty tools. I'd order a 0-20ftlb torque wrench if I wanted to do a really good job. It's unlikely that a dealer tech will take the time to torque your valve cover down properly.

It is involved, but not that difficult to do. Definitely use a decent torque wrench on the valve cover otherwise you risk cracking it.
You need to remove all of the cabin air filter housing pieces to get good clearance for the valve cover. It makes sense to replace plugs and maybe coils at this time, depending on your mileage.
I like FCP Euro for my parts. Try to stick to factory BMW or OEM parts.

You can find DIYs all over the internet. You can probably also find a PDF from BMW TIS (their online factory manual) floating around somewhere. You can follow a tutorial to get a copy installed locally on your HDD if you wish.

You'll probably break part number 11157553949 in the process of doing this job. They get extremely brittle.

Here is a solid DIY from youtube:

Awesome thanks a lot guys. Also got a question had someone selling coil packs, all 6 oem with 40,000 km on them for $100. Good deal? Do you guys replace the pcv valve as well? Saw one for bms heard factory ones are crap. Thoughts?

Don't bother with used coils. These ecus have issues with the coil drivers burning out. New ones are very close to that $100 price anyway.

The pcv valve is part of the valve cover. Some people recommend replacing the entire valve cover just for that valve. Your dealer may have done this. If your valve cover isn't cracked, then an aftermarket pcv valve may be the better way to go about this.

I purchased an FTP motorsport pcv valve for my tuned car, but I have not run the car since installing it and I have no feedback to give other than the aluminum part looks very well done. I've heard of some people experiencing a whistling nosie from it though. BMS makes quality products and I wouldn't hesitate to order theirs either.

Yeah bmw said the pcv valve is integrated inside the valve cover, but I’ve seen videos of it being outside the valve cover and in the back??

It is screwed into the valve cover in the back. BMW never made it a separate part number so the dealership can only sell you the entire valve cover. They call it integrated because as far as they're concerned the aftermarket solutions don't exist.

Ecs tuning and fcp euro are my go to websites for bmw parts. Fcp is really great about replacing broken parts, even if you broke them due to a bad installation. Ecs is much better with prices and ships faster in my experience. Neither company has done me wrong.

The video you sent shows the pcv valve that ftp and bms make their kits for.

Are you sure you want to do the valve cover itself? Unless there's a crack in it I would just do the gasket.

That's the only one I'm aware of. The hose I mentioned above by part number is also part of the pcv system.

I believe I've done the valve cover on three separate n54s by now and I have not experienced an issue that required the replacement of the entire cover. I did one engine twice so that makes four times.
