You should first go over the car and take care of what might have been neglected before thinking about how to make it faster. The amp, you have a DSP garbage system, You can buy another amp, but at this age, they are all gonna be failing left and right. Those DSP amps, even more so. Every E39 I have owned with DSP always had the amps go bad in them. The system is harder to upgrade than the HIFI system. Do yourself a favor, those BMW audio division engineers all need to be hunted down and put out of their misery. These morons never had a full clue of what a good sounding system should sound like.
DSP means Digital Sound Processing, meaning the crappy amp has the crossovers built into it. Each speaker is its own channel. Get an Alpine iLX W650 multimedia system, they aren’t that expensive, $300, run rca cables to the rear for some good aftermarket amps, the stock DSP speakers, gut them all out, buy the best speakers amps that you can afford, you can use the existing speaker wire runs from the amp if you don’t feel like running better wire to the speakers, anything will sound ten times better then what these BMW audio geniuses came up with. The subwoofer box in the right rear corner, throw it out, put it on ebay. I used two of mine as targets, filled it full of bullet holes. In one wagon, I have the Infinity 10 inch bass box with the built in 200 watt amp, sound great. In the other wagon, a 10” Alpine Type R in a box temporarily, until I build a round sub enclosure which will tuck away into my spare tire well. I always carry a tire plug kit, an electric air compressor, and they have always got me out of dodge when I had to use them on the side of the road. I figure, if I get a blow out, AAA, no big deal. The better sound is all worth it.
