could not find a recent thread so I hope you can give me some advice. I just trailered the Z4 from wyoming to here in washington, battery had less of a charge than a D cell. we had tried to jump start in wyoming no luck. I installed a new battery, symptom is still turn key to start, dashboard lights come on but no start. I spent a couple of hours yesterday looking at the you tube videos and they do not seem to work. I assume it is the immobilzer needing a reset or something similar, has anybody else had this issue and found a solution.
So when you turn the key to the start position, the car does not crank?
You have looked at a lot of videos but didn't tell us what you have investigated. That does not help us narrow down your problem.
The security system (EWS) has two functions:
- Crank disable. The EWS has to recognise the key code and a few other things before enabling crank.
- Drive away protection. Once the EWS recognises the key it will send a ISN code to the DME. If the code matches the one in the DME, the DME will enable spark.
An easy way to see if the EWS is the problem is to check fuse 01, 30 A, in the engine electronic fuse carrier under the bonnet/hood for 12 v DC. If the fuse has power, then the security system has been fully disabled. Your problem will a loose electrical connection or faulty starter motor.
If there is no voltage at fuse 01, then you have an EWS problem. It could be:
- Clutch switch or the Park Neutral selector switch.
- Key
- Ignition switch induction coil
- EWS
The best way to sort this out is to get a good scanner with BMW software and check for trouble codes in the engine computer (DME) and the EWS. Install "BMW Standard Tools" (free) onto a windows laptop and buy the cheap special cable. Get it here https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...tools.1274003/
Post the trouble codes and the descriptions here and we can help you.

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
will check tomorrow, however, I'm not now nor have I ever been a windows person, but I understand your directions thank you
Try a new key
Check that the non starting isn’t caused by the clutch stop.... turn it in to allow clutch to depress further.
It’s one of the causes of non starting described.
