I am new to the forum and planning my first BMW purchase.
My daily driver for the past 3.5 years is a 2017 Mazda MX-5 Soft Top (Edelbrock eForce SuperCharger, Header, Fox Racing 400/225 Coilovers) with 44K miles. My 2 Children are out of the house, though I have a live in Mother in-law. The SuperWife drives a 2012 Honda Odyssey leftover from soccer/softball duties from which I cannot pry her loose. Hence, I am looking for a new car to put between the uber small MX-5 and the family truckster.
I'm inclined toward the 2 series M2/M240i, but would consider the M3/M340i. It would be a daily (25m round trip), to go to dinner and to go visit the kids 2 hours away, mainly highway. I'm further inclined to a manual transmission, especially in a 2 series, but keep hearing the new automatics are much better manually shifted now. Any advice or recommendations. My one concern is that the M2/M3 might be a touch stiff for daily, highway duty.
Thanks!
I tested an M2 before ordering my M240i. You are correct, the M2 suspension is pretty stiff, as you’d expect. I’ve owned my car for over 3 years and I still make excuses to drive it. It’s a great car. I’ve driven a loaner (dealer took several hours to update gauge cluster software) that had the automatic transmission. It’s was “ok.” I much prefer the 6 speed manual transmission.
I track him (I’ve named him Gerhardt) and he’s a beast. C7 vettes don’t keep up on with him. The only change I’ve made is to replace the factory Brembo pads with Performance Friction 08 pads. The factory pads would last 3 laps at Virginia international raceway (VIR) before they overheated. The PF08 pads have never overheated at the track.
