    Bmw 420d Tinny Rattle ,

    Hi,

So yesterday heard a tinny rattle on start up which i had never heard before , as i drove off - sound disappeared ,
*The sound seems to be coming from underneath Car more towards engine bay area*

for it to reappear when Sat stationary for only a few seconds, then took it for drive few hour later again at low speed and i could hear the Tinny Rattle slightly ..

been in to Garage this morning and they have said Flywheel and Clutch need replacing .. *flywheel hitting exhaust downpipe and thats what is causing the rattle ..

Does this sound Like my Flywheel is on its way out ?

Car still Runs smooth through all gears at low and high speeds, goes in to gear no Problem ...

    Mileage 54,000

as anyone have any ideas ?

quoted £1300 supplied and fitted ..

I too would be rather skeptical, for your flywheel hitting the down pipe would mean to me that the transmission is really knackered and you would hear more than just a small rattle.

What I think is the throw-out bearing is worn, as it tends to rattle in neutral with the clutch out.

Would there be any other way to confirm it is the throw out bearing ..

Besides doing the the test above, no not really. If it is rather slight, I would just leave well enough alone until it get really obvious.

If this happened only while the car was cold, I would think of an idle pulley or a tension pulley with a bearing going bad, but since it happens when the car is at operating temps, then it's not it.

The other thing you could do is have the exhaust looked at, for there might be a loose heat shield and if it's loose, that too can cause a rattle hot or cold at a specific RPM.

    Thanks for Reply ..

That is what my first thought was , something to do with Heat shield, But this Morning started up fine, then balanced clutch at biting point and the Tinny sound/rattle was there,
Turn engine off and try again AND the sound wont appear again ..
Goes through Gears smooth , No slipping etc ..

taking it to a different garage tomorrow for a second opinion ,so will update this thread ..

Now that it's more pronounced, I would see about booking an appointment at another shop that works on BMW's, think of it as a second opinion like going to a doctor before getting surgery..
