PSA: Schwarz Coupe Door Seals NLA

For those of you who have decent condition door seals in schwarz, I suggest you take care of them as they are currently NLA from BMW. I had my brother who is working in Munich try to reach out to a local dealer to see the process of these getting reproduce.

Currently, BMW requires enough demand to restart production of these parts (like many NLA) parts. Problem is there isn't a defined threshold but the current queue is 128 which doesn't seem like a whole lot. To get on the queue, it'll cost 400 euros (50% of that is no refundable) and cross your fingers.

In the interim, OZWorks based in turkey has reproduce these (among other e36 items like vaders) but they are slightly different because the ends are separated (vs a loop like Oem) so that you can use it on either side (driver or passenger). I am going to take the hit and try these out and keep everyone posted.

Parts often go "NLA" and then come back. I wouldn't stress people out over this just yet. This isn't the first time the door seals have gone to zero stock.

I'm assuming you didn't have anyone look into BMW's production schedule. I'll ask my dealer tomorrow to look that up.

These parts are handed, are they omitting the ‘pig tail’ piece also?

I have been kind of trying to get one of these for more then a year now. Just the other day I decided to buy the slate colored one and I am going to try and dye it black.

They have 127 backordered of 957 and 78 of 958. They missed a scheduled production this year but they are not NLA and should be rescheduled. That’s a good number of orders waiting so there’s no reason not to make them.

Expect to pay through the nose for them.

As Bray explained, this happens often. I clearly recall the engine underhood light being on backorder for a couple of years and then it suddenly showed up again.

Also note that this year is has not been great for manufacturing. It's no surprise they missed their production date.

I won’t doubt it, but with the amount of miles I put on my car it should last a very long time haha.

Yeah, 2020 is not the best example.

Same here. I bought both new in 2016. Car had done 56.5k mile then. So they were fine, but wanted a
    fresh set nonetheless.

Was afraid of missing out and you never know when something will stay NLA.

Absolutely. I’ve been buying things up just in case for the same reason.

    56k miles, what a dream!

If they are not leaking, is there any reason to change them? Will new seals reduce road noise?

Most people replace them because they are torn. They can also fall apart.

No, they will not reduce road noise unless there is an issue already. They are actually annoying as the remade seals appear to be thicker requiring more effort to close the doors. Mine have been on the car for 6 years. I was hoping they would break in, but nope. You also have to trim the tail that tucks into the fender... something I wasn't expecting.

Hmm strange. When I had just fitted my new ones, it clearly took more effort to close the doors. This was no surprise as the (then) 18 year old ones, must have been 'flattened' by now.

After a while though, they did break in and it's back to normal.

The main reason I wanted new ones, was because of the velvet-ish fabric material. My old ones had all kind if lint/dust trapped that I couldn't get 100% clean.

The seals itself, were still in as good as perfect condition otherwise. No rips or broken down material. So I'm keeping these as a back-up.

how does one get on the backorder list in the US? I was about to go through my brother who lives in germany and his local dealer but this could save him the hassle

I’d go thru the brother, and get on the list if there was such a thing.

You just need to go into your dealer and order them. If your dealer doesn't suck, they won't expect a deposit.

    - 98 m3, techno/anthrazit cloth, 124k and officially worthless - 89 m3, alpine/black 143k and officially old - 2000 323it, tiag/grey, 169k and officially boring

I doubt it. I ordered so many parts that were NLA and if they are really NLA, that was that. There was no option to be added to some list.

No idea what parts are considered again if enough people order them. But as there is no list for every part, I don't know. In that case BMW would be producing every part of every model till the end of times.

Mine have been leaking for a while... track car and garaged most of the time but would like to install new, clean ones. Just keep my fingers crossed and hopefully they show up again.
Lime Rock Park... the most fun you can have in a mile and a half.
