i am looking into hard wiring my GPS unit to the fuse box.. i have a fuse tap and in looking at the fuses they are all original so i was thinking about replacing them with modern fuses.. any reason not to?
thanks... bill
Old or new they’re the same. I wouldn’t worry about the fuse age.
As long as the fuses aren't damaged or corroded, there is no need to replace them. It's not a technology that has been improved upon since the car was built.
People with their battery in the trunk should check their main fuse (on the battery lead) at some point, however. Moisture accumulating in the trunk can corrode that fuse and cause some very annoying problems.
Why on earth would you want to hard wire your phone to your car? /s
the power plug on my Nuvi GPS ( not a phone) won't stay plugged in so i am looking to hardwire it to avoid that problem
When people say "hardwire" all I hear is "battery drainer"

When people suggest using a GPS I think back to about 12 years ago before smart phones.
Tape the plug to the NUVIthe power plug on my Nuvi GPS ( not a phone) won't stay plugged in so i am looking to hardwire it to avoid that problem
Feed the wire through the dash (maybe drill a small hole)
Attached the wire to a USB plug
Bury a USB adapter under the console somewhere
Wire the USB to a circuit that's only hot when the ignition is on
I'm thinking of doing something similar for my spare, decommissioned phone that I use exclusively for Torque Pro, an app that connects to the computer via a Bluetooth adapter to the car's OBDII port. The only difference is that I just want a short piece of power wire fed through the console to power the phone since my plug is fine. I have to take the phone off its magnetic mount stalk when I park for obvious reasons. And, while I'm at it, I'll put in another power wire for my main phone (for navigation).
